Don Mackay

Few believed things could get worse, but under Don Mackay they did. Unusually for a manager, he had been a goalkeeper as a player, and a Scottish one at that, with Forfar, Dundee and Southend between 1958 and 1974.

He had also coached at Bristol City, Coventry, Rangers and Norlesundby in Denmark before getting a start in management with Dundee (1980-3). Spells with Coventry (1984-6) and Blackburn (1987-91) followed before he was appointed to the Fulham job in January 1992.

Mackay talked a good job, but again, the players found him weak and confusing. A common sight during his reign was chairman Hill leaving the directors box for the dug-out, and a substitution usually followed shortly afterwards.

A promising 1992-3 was followed by a disastrous 1993-4 and, after a half-time dressing-room showdown at Leyton Orient with nine games of the season to go, Mackay was shown the door.

Lewington stepped up again to try to save the club from the appalling prospect of relegation to the League basement, but defeat at Swansea in the final match consigned the Cottagers to oblivion.
