The job of managing a football club has changed beyond all recognition since Fulham joined the Football League. It reflects the growth in popularity of football and the evolution of clubs as businesses to the extent that today’s managers are expected to be businessmen, coaches, psychologists and public relations experts.
Not surprisingly, as the rewards for success increase, so do the penalties for failure and, as a result, there has been an acceleration of manager turnover in football.
Historically, in their choice of managers, the Fulham Board used to have a slight bias in favour of former players. Over half of the managerial appointments from Andy Ducat in 1924 onwards have once played for Fulham.
They include:
Andy Ducat, Joe Bradshaw, Jimmy Hogan, Frank Osborne, Bedford Jezzard, Bobby Robson, Bill Dodgin Jnr, Malcolm Macdonald, Micky Adams, Paul Bracewell, Karlheinze Riedle and Chris Coleman.
