Murphy's Optimism

Tuesday 18th September 2007

Danny Murphy made his Fulham debut at the tail end of last weekend's draw with Wigan and whilst the former England international felt the Whites deserved more from the game he was impressed with his new side's overall performance.

“It was nice to be involved in and around the dressing room in the build-up to the game, to be involved with the banter and the pre-match tension. It was nice to get on and have a few touches; unfortunately we didn’t get what we deserved from the game.

Murphy“I thought the lads played great and to go to Wigan and put in a performance like that says a lot as it isn’t an easy place to go to. But its like the gaffer said, sometimes you need to kill games off and we will be working on ensuring we do that in future games."

Murphy's Premiership experience puts him in a good position to evaluate a squad's top flight pedigree and the midfielder firmly believes Lawrie Sanchez' squad has a bright future and should be aiming high this season.

“There has been a big turnover of players this summer and for things to click right into place straight away isn’t always easy.

Having said that, with ability that we’ve got there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be looking at being in the top half of the table as a starting point and obviously if we reach that then why not push on from there?

“I think there is a big group of teams who are on an even keel fighting for those European places. Perhaps that’s a bit too much to ask but why not aim for that? We have a squad that is building together, we have a really good blend of youth and experience and we’re confident of doing well as a team.”
