Clint Dempsey has been named the Monster Player of the Month for August by supporters.
The American midfielder started the season on the substitutes’ bench but earned a place in Lawrie Sanchez' starting line-up after his recent performances.
Dempsey’s first start of the campaign came against Aston Villa where he partnered David Healy in attack and he capped off an impressive performance with his first goal of the season.
The American international was once more leading the line against Spurs, scoring a superb first half header. His energy and drive was at the heart of Fulham's second half comeback.
Speaking to fulhamfc.com, Dempsey was pleased to have won the accolade:
“It’s always an honour when you’re recognised by the fans for your play,” he said. “The season didn’t start out exactly how I wanted in terms of playing time. But through working hard the coach gave me a chance and I was able to show that I could play.
“I like being in the attack and any time you have the opportunity to be closer to the opponent’s goal you’re going to have more chances to score. I’m a quite tall and decent in the air so I think that’s what allowed me to play up front.
“I’ve been watching Brian (McBride), who is a more experienced player and does a better job in the air, but through watching him and playing more I hope to be successful in that position for as long as I’m on the field. The most important thing for me is to play and contribute towards the team. In whatever position play, I want to be the best that I can be.”
This weekend sees Fulham travel up to the JJB Stadium to face Wigan Athletic (buy tickets) and Dempsey is hoping for a large and vocal backing from the Fulham fans.
“It’s good to have support when you’re away,” he explained. “The away support has been good this year. When you know that your fans are behind you, supporting you, it always gives you an extra boost.
“It’s an important game for us and if we can get some points out of these next games we’ll be putting ourselves in a good league position. It’s important to get as many points as early as you can and having more support will only help us do better.”
