Fulham have earned deserved praise for their recent resilient away displays, securing draws at both Anfield and Villa Park.
Those points gained away from Craven Cottage have proved vital in keeping the Whites in the top half of the table but with the current league standings showing no immediate signs of spreading out, Fulham winger Simon Davies was mindful of maintaining a solid away record whilst also keeping the Whites’ home form ticking over.
“Following on from the Liverpool game, we’re looking very solid as a team which is something we’ve been working very hard at,” he told fulhamfc.com. “It probably sacrifices a little bit when going forward but when you’re away from home you’ve got to take that approach and it’s been successful over the last few games so we’re obviously very happy.
“You get the basics right first and try not to get beat – then you take your chances if and when you create them. We had to improve our away record this season and now that we’re at home this weekend we have to focus on keeping our home form going.”
One of the key factors to Fulham’s displays this season has been the relative stability of Roy Hodgson’s starting eleven.
“’I’m sure that most managers whose teams aren’t involved in European football would want a settled eleven because you get consistency and continuity,” Davies explained. “That’s been showing in our form where we’ve had one defeat in eight games. We’re just looking more solid as a team and if we can keep the clean sheets coming, with the players we’ve got in the team, the goals will also come.”
Saturday’s opponents, Manchester City|, are currently the second highest scoring team in the Premier League, with only Chelsea having netted more times, but as Davies explained, the Team will be mindful of being drawn away from their game and into one which suits City.
“It should be an entertaining game,” he said. “But we don’t want to forget our discipline because the Manager drills the shape of the team into us. City have got some fantastic attacking players and they’ll be a threat for us but we’ve been awesome at home so far and hopefully we can come out on top.
“Our home form has been the complete opposite from last year when we were so vulnerable at home. Now we know that we can beat anyone at the Cottage so we’re all really looking forward to Saturday. We respect Man City but they’ll be coming here knowing that we’re difficult to play against – we’ve got to live up to that fact, get after them and start as well as we have done in the past.”
