With 20 minutes to go in the match away to Manchester City, Fulham were mathematically relegated. With results going against us elsewhere and City holding a two goal advantage, things looked bleak.
Yet the spirit and determination that characterised the Club throughout the season never wavered and a stunning late fight back, courtesy of a brace from Joe Kamara and a strike from Danny Murphy, gave the platform for Fulham’s Great Escape.
Although a stunning result against Manchester City had been attained, the Whites still found themselves in the relegation zone and with a mountain to climb. Next up were Birmingham City, another side scrapping for their League status. With confidence brimming, Fulham beat the Blues thanks to second half goals from Brian McBride and Erik Nevland.
For the first time since Boxing Day, Fulham moved out of the relegation places and more importantly could at last be the masters of their own destiny and not have to look to other sides for favours.
However, if destiny was in our hands, it was making sure we worked hard for every last point. There aren’t many harder places to have to visit on the last day of the season than Fratton Park, yet that is where the fixture list sent us.
In a tight and nervous encounter the game ebbed and flowed, yet it was a great header from Danny Murphy that gave Fulham a slender lead. What followed was 14 minutes, of nail biting, stomach churning tension as Fulham scrapped and battled to hold on to their lead. As the referee blew his final whistle, the joy and relief on the faces of players and fans alike was there for all to see, as Fulham guaranteed another season in the Premier League and completed what can only be described as the ’Great Escape.’
To commemorate this unbelievable turnaround, Fulham Football Club has produced a limited edition print, with images of some of the defining moments of the season. There are only 250 editions of these prints (all numbered) and they will be sold on a first come, first served basis.
