Arguably Fulham's Man of the Match at Fratton Park, Brede Hangeland was at his imperious best to deny Portsmouth's front line on several occasions last Sunday.
After the game Hangeland explained how Roy Hodgson's team managed to block out the immeasurable pressure of last Sunday's three-way relegation battle and his utter joy at the final whistle.
“I can’t describe it…so many people had written us off and to comeback like that, it’s an amazing feeling. Everyone at the Club and all our fans really deserve this - I think we can be proud of the job we’ve done.
"When you think about the pressure it can really make you feel a little bit sick just thinking about it so you just have to try and focus on the fact that it’s a game like any other game and not the consequences of the result. We’ve done that really well and done ourselves proud.
“I think we played well but we didn’t create many chances so it looked difficult. When Danny climbs up and heads the ball in - anything can happen and we did well to see the game out. We were practically relegated so I think it feels a bit like going up. I think if we ever win something I’m not sure it would come close to this feeling. It’s just amazing.
Hangelend believes Fulham's remarkable end of season run was down to the hard work put in on the Training Ground and the defender paid tribute to Manager Roy Hodgson after the game.
“We’ve seen the team improve, especially over the last month. We’ve worked on the same stuff on the Training Ground every day and now it’s paying off. It was good that it did in the end – we’ve taken 12 points from the last five games and we needed all of them. It’s a fantastic achievement.
“I’ve been impressed with the Manager. He’s always really calm and focused on the things we need to do. He doesn’t get carried away if we’re leading, or not leading, he gives us the right messages and he’s had a big impact on this achievement."
Hangeland also paid tribute to the fantastic support which has played such a crucial role in Fulham's end of season survival bid before casting his eye on the 2008/09 Premier League season.
“I know a lot of fans have had a hard time this season and I want to thank everyone for the fantastic support. It really played a part for us and hopefully we can come back much stronger next year.”
