Golden Goal

Wednesday 14th May 2008

MurphyFulham midfielder Danny Murphy has described Sunday's winning goal at Fratton Park as, "one of the most important goals I’ve ever scored."

Murphy was quick to praise the character of Roy Hodgson's side after the game on Sunday before reflecting on one being the scorer of arguably the most important goal in the Club's recent history.

“Of course it’s nice to get the credit but over the last few weeks – there have been heroes every week. We’ve shown great character.

"Obviously a lot of Liverpool fans will remember the Manchester United goals but in terms of importance this goal is something that will never be forgotten I suppose, not just by the Fulham fans, but by me as well."

Fulham secured their Premier League future by winning four of the final five games of the season and Murphy pinpoints one memorable victory at the City of Manchester Stadium as the turning point for Roy Hodgson's players.

“It was magnificent to win four out of the last five games. People had written us off a few weeks ago. I think at Manchester City we were relegated at one stage but our second half performance actually gave us some real belief and we saw some light at the end of the tunnel. We followed it up with the Birmingham win – it’s been a hell of a few weeks!

“To top it off with Sunday’s performance – I don’t care what people say about them [Portsmouth] having an FA Cup final the following week – they’ve still got quality players. They were trying very hard and we showed we’re a good team.”
