John Pantsil has been named Ghana’s Footballer of the Year by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana.
The Fulham defender was adjudged winner of the prestigious award ahead of other players including Inter Milan’s Sulley Muntari. Pantsil was considered by the sportswriters for his outstanding and consistent performances for both Fulham and the Ghana national football team, the Black Stars.
Pantsil has for the past five years been Ghana’s number one right back and spoke of his honour at being named Ghana's Footballer of the Year.
“I’m very happy to have been recognised in this manner. It’s a great award and a great honour for me and my family,” said Pantsil.
“There are many good Ghanaian footballers and to be adjudged the best is really an honour and I thank God for it.
“I want to dedicate this award to my parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paintsil and to all members of my family for their support.
“My parents have been solidly behind me and I couldn’t have reached where I’m today without their prayers and support.
Pantsil also paid glowing tribute to Fulham manager Roy Hodgson for the “great” influence he has had on his career.
“I keep saying the manager (Roy Hodgson) is like a father to me,” Pantsil said. "He had faith in me and brought me here and I must say he has greatly influenced my play. His influence is great.
“He puts enough confidence in me and if you have such a great manager, the sky will be your limit.
“I will forever be grateful to the manager and Fulham for the confidence they had in me.”
