Following a pitch inspection on Saturday afternoon (1.15pm) – the home match against Blackburn Rovers has been called off due to a frozen pitch.
The recent freezing conditions have seen temperatures dip well below zero by the banks of the Thames and despite the best efforts of the ground staff, the Craven Cottage surface was deemed unplayable by referee Rob Styles.
Pitch covers have been in place for a large part of the last two weeks, and Met weather reports had shown favourable forecasts regarding milder weather during the latter part of the week and Saturday.
The covers were removed on Friday and the pitch was playable. The covers were taken off again on Saturday morning and a proportion of the pitch was found to be hard. Weather reports were still forecasting an increase in temperature which simply did not materialise and at 1pm it was -1C, by 3pm temperatures had dropped again to
-2.5C.
The Club is naturally extremely sorry for inconvenience caused to all supporters coming to Saturday’s game.
