West Ham v Fulham
Sunday January 18th, 2009 (Kick-Off: 1.30pm)
For the fourth successive season Fulham make a January trip to east London to face West Ham United. The game may well see a number of players on both sides facing their former club, with Paul Konchesky, John Pantsil and Bobby Zamora all previously at Upton Park, whilst former Whites Luis Boa Morte and goalkeeper Jan Lastuvka currently wear the Hammers’ Claret and Blue.
Having survived the controversy surrounding their great escape in 2007 the Hammers fared much better last season finishing in 10th place. The east London side started the current season with home wins over Wigan and Blackburn sandwiching a heavy defeat at Manchester City, before the club was rocked with the shock resignation of manager Alan Curbishley who was reportedly unhappy about the sale of defenders George McCartney and Anton Ferdinand to Sunderland.
Former Chelsea favourite Gianfranco Zola was appointed manager and began with two wins in the opening three games, including a stormy 2-1 success at Craven Cottage. Subsequently the Hammers’ form has been patchy, especially at home, but they have enjoyed an excellent festive season winning 4-1 at Portsmouth prior to a 2-1 home success against Stoke. Finances are however likely to dictate any January moves in or out of Upton Park with the club itself recently put up for sale by its Icelandic owners.
