Clint Dempsey's USA side came close to causing an upset in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup FInal on Sunday but a second half comeback saw Brazil win by three goals to two at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.
Fulham midfielder Dempsey put the USA ahead after just ten minutes of play. Jonathan Spector's cross from the right found Dempsey, who volleyed the ball into the far corner of the net and past the despairing dive of Brazil keeper Julio Cesar.
Brazil were left stunned when Landon Donovan doubled the USA's lead after 27 minutes, putting the finishing touch on a superb counter attacking move to put the States two-nil up going into the break.
Brazil had a major task ahead of them in the second half but wasted no time, pulling one back within a minute, when Luis Fabiano fired a left footed strike past Tim Howard from the edge of the area.
It was one-way traffic following Fabiano's strike and the USA rode their luck on the hour mark when Kaka's header appeared to have crossed the line but was not given. Thirteen minutes later Howard could not keep out Fabiano, who drew Brazil level from close range to set up a superb finale.
Seven minutes from time Lucio headed home Elano's corner from the left flank to put Brazil ahead by three goals to two. The USA could not find a way back in the final minutes of play but could certainly be proud of their performances in the 2009 Confederations Cup ahead of next summer's World Cup Finals in South Africa.
