On Sunday we make our first visit in six seasons to Molineux. It has been some 24 years since our last victory at the famous ground, an end of season 4-0 success which included a Tony Sealy hat-trick, Wolves were then in a freefall that would threaten their very existence.
Now in considerably finer fettle, the Black Country club won the Championship title by seven clear points last season. Never off the top spot after early November, Mick McCarthy’s side even managed to ride out a sequence of just one win in 11 at the turn of the year.
Their leading marksmen were Sylvan Ekanks-Blake, who included nine penalties amongst his 23 goals, and Scottish international Chris Iwelumo who chipped in with 14.
Predictably, the new promotees have been active in the transfer market this summer, strengthening all departments of their squad. Former Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann arrived from Reading, along with Republic of Ireland international striker Kevin Doyle. They also loaned Chelsea centre-back Michael Mancienne, and acquired Sunderland defender Greg Halford and Southampton midfielder Andrew Surman.
Upon commencement of the new campaign, an opening day reverse to West Ham was quickly forgotten when Wolves took all three points at Wigan. A narrow and somewhat unlucky defeat at Manchester City followed before a 1-1 home draw with Hull City. They also progressed to the third round of the Carling Cup where they face a trip to Old Trafford having just about seen off League One Swindon, winning 6-5 on penalties following 120 goalless minutes at Molineux.
