Adam Watts Interview

Who has been the biggest influence on your career?

It has to be family and friends, they have always been there to give me support. My Mum and Dad have always encouraged me; they took me to football matches and were always behind me. My Dad would help me look at areas I could improve and was the first one to say well done when I had played well which fills you with confidence as a young player.

How would you describe yourself as a player?

Brave, good in the air and a good tackler; I absolutely love to tackle, with strikers its all about scoring goals, with me it is the same but with tackles. I get a real buzz out of defending.

What do you think is the most important thing for people wanting to become a footballer to remember?

For me there are two things; your ability to listen, to whoever it may be, parents, coaches or teachers as they are there to progress you both as a person and as a player. The other thing is hard work, once you have taken these things on board you have to work really hard to make them happen. There is no shame in making mistakes as long as you learn from them and recover from them.

What is your favourite thing about playing at Fulham?

There are so many things that are great about this Club, but I think it has to be being surrounded by Premiership players. You learn from them consistently as they have all been there and I think this is an amazing opportunity for any young footballer hoping to make a career in the game.

Were you always a defender?

I actually started out as a left winger, then I got moved into a central midfield role. I gradually moved further back, first becoming a holding midfielder before becoming a central defender and I have played there ever since. Hopefully I will never be moved back any further, I don't fancy my chances in goal!

When you were growing up were there any defenders who you thought you would like to be like?

When I was younger I really liked Ian Pearce, so you can imagine how pleased I was when he came to Fulham. Apart from him I would have to say John Terry as he is just the sort of defender I admire, really brave and committed.
