A minute’s silence on Remembrance Day was observed prior to kick-off at the DW Stadium on Sunday in honour of Britain’s fallen.

Roy Hodgson’s hand was strengthened ahead of Sunday’s fixture with the welcome return of Damien Duff from injury.

The Republic of Ireland international featured in Hodgson’s starting eleven. The one other notable change to a familiar Fulham line-up was the inclusion of Erik Nevland in attack in place of Diomansy Kamara (injured).

After a quiet start to the game Wigan created the first moment of danger after five minutes of play when Rodallega almost latched onto a fine N’Zogbia free kick at the far post. It was a close call and thankfully Rodallega was beaten by the pace of the ball.

Five minutes later Erik Nevland made no mistake with a headed effort, which had Kirkland beaten, but the Norwegian was agonisingly denied by the post.

Nevland’s effort came after Bobby Zamora produced a wonderful chip over Wigan’s defence to play his strike partner through on goal. From 16 yards out Nevland headed over Kirkland towards goal. The header had Wigan's keeper beaten but the ball then bounced off the far post and away from goal.

Fulham were left to rue their misfortune two minutes later when Boyce fired past Schwarzer from close range to give Wigan the lead.

The goal came courtesy of a cross from Wigan’s left, which was headed back across goal at the far post to Boyce in a central position six yards out. Boyce made no mistake with his finish, firing his right-footed shot into the corner of the net.

A minute later N’Zogbia sent a stunning left footed drive towards the top corner of the net from 25 yards. Fortunately the outstanding Schwarzer produced a superb fingertip save to deny Wigan a second in as many minutes.

Schwarzer needed to be alert once again on 23 minutes when Rodallega sent a curling effort to the far post from the 18-yard line following a fine one-two with Scotland on the edge of the area.

Nevland came close again with his second headed effort of the game after 26 minutes. Fulham had enjoyed a concerted spell of pressure and when Duff cut inside from the right flank and whipped in a dangerous cross the predatory Nevland was first to the ball.

Once again, Kirkland was beaten but this time the ball landed on the roof of the net and Wigan’s lead remained intact.

On the half hour mark Rodallega came close to adding a second for Wigan when he fired in a direct free kick from 25 yards. Schwarzer had the shot covered before a deflection sent the ball off course and just over the cross bar.

After 37 minutes of play Fulham were back in the game thanks to a Clint Dempsey penalty. The American earned the spot-kick after being tripped by Bramble 12 yards from goal after latching onto Damien Duff's free kick from the right flank.

With regular penalty takers Murphy and Kamara absent through injury, Dempsey stepped up and confidently sent Kirkland the wrong way before calmly stroking the ball into the far corner of the net.

Fulham were the team in the ascendancy as half time approached and spent the final minutes of the first period camped in Wigan’s half. After going a goal behind Hodgson’s players responded with the character and fight that has come to be expected of them and thoroughly deserved to be on level terms at the interval.

Both sides remained unchanged for the second half and Fulham got the game underway, attacking towards their travelling supporters.

Fulham’s crisp, accurate passing had Hodgson’s team in control during the opening stages of the second half and the Whites almost took the lead after 54 minutes.

Fulham won a free-kick 25 yards from goal and Dempsey’s thunderous effort could only be parried away by Kirkland. Greening was first to the ball and fired goalwards from close range but to his credit Kirkland was up in an instant to make another impressive save at close quarters.

Seconds later, and against the run of play, Scharner smashed a fierce 20-yard drive towards the top corner of Fulham’s goal. Schwarzer’s positioning was perfect and the keeper tipped the ball behind for a corner.

Brede Hangeland needed every inch of his towering frame to clear a Wigan free kick away from goal just after the hour mark. Wigan had moved up a gear and seconds later Schwarzer need to be alert to tip a powerful header by Thomas over the cross bar.

N’Zogbia, by far Wigan’s most threatening player on Sunday, almost earned the home side the lead after producing a superb piece of individual play.

N’Zogbia cut through Fulham’s defence with pace and guile on 70 minutes before firing across goal from the left hand side of the area. Thankfully Schwarzer was on hand to produce a fine save low to his left to deny the winger.

Five minutes later it was Fulham’s turn to go close when Konchesky delivered a fine cross from the left by-line. The cross fell to Duff whose shot from six yards was blocked. The rebound fell to Dempsey but the American fired his effort high over the cross bar.

Twelve minutes from time Roy Hodgson introduced Dickson Etuhu to the fray. The Nigerian international replaced Jonathan Greening in central midfield.

Damien Duff was the next to be denied by fine goalkeeping after 81 minutes. His left footed shot from the edge of the area was tipped around the post by Kirkland. From the resulting corner Brede Hangeland soared above his marker to head just wide of goal.

Chris Baird was the next to try his luck with a fierce drive from 30 yards, which dipped over Kirkland’s cross bar. Roy Hodgson then made his second change of the game, replacing Nevland with Zoltan Gera for the final few minutes.

As the game approached full time Fulham were once again the team on top and looked far more likely to snatch a late winner at the DW Stadium on Sunday.

However with barely a minute left Wigan were handed the final opportunity of the game when Etuhu conceded a free-kick 25 yards from goal. Fortunately Schwarzer was once again ideally positioned to collect the set piece with ease.

After three minutes of added time Referee Phil Dowd called time on Sunday’s contest and Fulham left Wigan with another valuable point on their travels. Roy Hodgson's team now reside in 11th place on 15 points and will be back in action on Saturday 21st November when they travel to St. Andrews to take on Birmingham City.
