Fulham went three goals down within half an hour at Fratton Park and despite a courageous fight to get back on level terms the damage had already been done, with the match finishing 4-3 to the hosts.
Portsmouth were three goals ahead and cruising towards an impressive first win of the season, but by the end of the first half their normally vibrant fans had been reduced to apprehension and near-silence.

This was because Fulham, recovering from a dreadful spell in which they conceded three goals in 30 minutes, had recovered their poise with two goals and were looking the stronger side when referee Barry Knight blew his whistle at the end of a hectic and exciting first half.

But in the end, a hat-trick from Aiyegbeni Yakubu helped Portsmouth climb up from bottom-equal spot

Portsmouth went ahead in the 19th minute when Eyal Berkovic, not a noted goal scorer, hit home a shot from the edge of the area after the pace of Yakubu had unsettled the Fulham defence.

Portsmouth were further ahead three minutes later when Ricardo Fuller, making his debut after his move from Preston, was tripped by Luis Boa Morte and Yakubu made the most of the spot kick.

The match looked to be all over in the 28th minute when Fuller put Yakubu behind the defence to beat Van Der Sar with a right-foot shot.

But the warning signs were already there for Portsmouth because their goalkeeper, Shaka Hislop had already been pressed into meaningful action in keeping out a shot from Thomas Radzinski.

In the 39th minute a superb left-wing cross from Boa Morte had the Portsmouth defence back-peddling and Andy Cole was at the far post to head past Hislop.

Portsmouth's self belief visibly drained and two minutes later Claus Jensen put Boa Morte through to shoot through the goalkeeper's legs to bring to an end an eventful first half for the Portuguese international winger.

The feverish action showed no signs of abating in the second half with chances at both ends almost every time there was an attack. Moritz Volz blocked a goal-bound shot from Berkovic in the 52nd minute with his face and knowing little about his heroics.

Fuller, showing no signs of being overawed by the step up from the First Division, shot at Van Der Sar with a clear sight of goal, but there was plenty of activity in the Portsmouth goalmouth.

Boa Morte, proving an awkward customer for Primus, got past his marker in the 56th minute, but then shot across the face of the goal. Hislop had been blamed in some quarters at the interval for not keeping out the Fulham goals, but he regained his cult-hero status among Portsmouth fans on the hour when he was quickly off his line to block a shot from Sylvan Legwinski when an equaliser looked a certainty.

Portsmouth went close again in the 65th minute when Steve Stone was thwarted inside the six-yard box by some desperate defending before Legwinski, who had been involved in some lively tussles with Berkovic, was booked in the 67th minute for fouling the same player. Yakubu completed his hat-trick in the 72nd, but Fulham hit back again three minutes later through Carlos Bocanegra.
