Fulham and Charlton shared the points on Saturday afternoon in an often scrappy affair at Craven Cottage. Following Claus Jensen’s full return to First Team action in last week’s defeat against Spurs, Fulham were further boosted by the sight of Steed Malbranque back in a white shirt.

Charlton started the brighter when, in the fourth minute, South African striker, Shaun Bartlett , found himself with the ball at his feet only a matter of yards away from an open goal. Fortunately for the Whites, the big front man trod on the ball with the goal at his mercy, allowing Alain Goma to make the saving tackle.  Bartlett soon spared Fulham again when his tame shot was blocked by Van der Sar on the line.

Fulham had a shout for handball turned down in the 14th minute when Chris Perry looked to have led with his arm in the area.  Steed Malbranque looked back to his best in the resulting spell of pressure when he delightfully jinked past two players before unfortunately playing a less than accomplished final pass.

Zat Knight should have given Fulham the lead in the 19th minute when he rose highest at the back post and planted a firm header just wide from a well delivered Jensen corner.  Then, just moments later Knight tried his luck again from long range with an effort that Kiely could only parry before scooping up at the second attempt.

With the long awaited midfield partnership of Malbranque and Jensen in place, the Fulham faithful were catching their first few glimpses of what trickery the two could produce as a series of flicks and touches had the crowd purring.  Unfortunately such moments were few and far between as the match often sprang from one side of the pitch to the other, without much interplay.

Just after the half hour Malbranque fed a well weighted pass into the path of Liam Rosenior who burst past his marker in the penalty area, however, with a pass to Andrew Cole only available for a split-second the young full back missed his opportunity to set up his team-mate.

For all the menace that Fulham were showing in and around the Charlton area, the visitors were looking most dangerous on the counter attack.  The pace of Konchesky down the left and Danny Murphy’s drive in the centre of midfield meant that a watchful eye had to be kept at the back.

The visitors started the second half on the front foot yet with neither team producing any chances of note, the game remained finely poised: a resolute and solid Charlton outfit against a Fulham side looking capable of creating a chance out of nothing.

The Whites almost broke the deadlock on the hour mark when a cute Jensen free kick was met by Alain Goma only yards from goal. Moments before, both Andrew Cole and Talal El Karkouri were booked when a chase for a Steed Malbranque through ball ended with El Karkouri pushing Cole to the ground before the former England international returned the compliment.

Luis Boa Morte next tried his luck from the edge of the area which brought about a routine save from Kiely.  Fulham continued to look the more likely to score in the second period yet the end product still failed to trouble the Addicks’ keeper.

Edwin van der Sar was called into action on 77 minutes to deny what would certainly have been the opening goal of the match.  Following a spell of pressure on the Fulham goal, the ball fell to Konchesky, whose goal bound shot was spectacularly clawed away from the top corner by the big stopper.
