Despite going down to ten men, Fulham were looking to hold on for a point on the road until Villa substitute Shaun Maloney popped up in injury time to snatch all three points for the home side.

Fulham mad a good start with Clint Dempsey giving the Whites the lead on six minutes, however the dangerous Ashley Young got Villa back on level pegging.

First Half Action

Latest signing Kasey Keller was handed his Fulham debut as the Whites looked to record their first win on the road in the 07/08 campaign. With Hameur Bouazza and Lee Cook ruled out through injury, Lawrie Sanchez opted to start with Diomansy Kamara on the left wing and Clint Dempsey up front with David Healy.

4 mins
Fulham got the match off to a bright start when Alexey Smertin picked out Clint Dempsey with a well executed cross-field ball. The American brought the ball down on the right edge of the Villa penalty area and played a pass into the path of former Villa midfielder, Steven Davis. The Northern Ireland international took his time but eventually saw his shot blocked.

6 mins – Fulham Goal - Dempsey
Fulham soon took the lead with only their second attack of the match. The Whites successfully defended a corner and the ball fell to Diomansy Kamara who led the charge up the middle of the pitch. Nigel Reo-Coker, who was in close pursuit, managed to nick the ball away from Kamara - but only into the path of Davis who played a return ball to Kamara. Dempsey had successfully found space and he was on hand to receive the through ball and finish past Scott Carson.

13 mins
As expected, the home side were unruffled by the early goal and soon threatened when the imprssive Reo-Coker shrugged off a challenge from Davis and fed a through ball to Agbonlahor. The speedy attacker managed to turn inside Carlos Bocanegra but Paul Konchesky did well to cover his defensive partner and snuff out the danger.

15 mins
Chris Baird had his hands full in dealing with the threat posed by Ashley Young. With a quarter of an hour on the clock, the former Watford man managed to beat Baird to the touchline to fire a cross in which was smothered by Keller at the near post.

20 mins
Fulham continued to show their attacking intent when they pegged the home side back with a wonderful interchange of passes on the edge of the Villa penalty area. Excellent work from Davis, Davies, Smertin and Dempsey had to the home crowd looking on uncomfortably.

24 mins
Paul Konchesky came to the rescue once more with Fulham’s defence caught well out of position following a Villa counter attack. The break away left Chris Baird having to cover two advancing Villa players some 35 yards apart. The ball was played through to Carew who had only Keller left to beat – however Konchesky managed to get back in the nick of time before the Norwegian could pull the trigger.

30 mins
Fulham almost doubled their advantage when Zat Knight headed a Simon Davies corner back into the danger area. Diomansy Kamara was first to the loose ball and drilled his shot against Petrov, in what what looked like a strong claim for handball.

33 mins
With both of Villa’s attackers looking to play off the shoulder of their Fulham opponents, the Whites’ defence was looking susceptible to any well placed flick-ons. Indeed, Agbonlahor once again fed Carew, who held off Konchesky but failed to make Keller work.

45 mins
With Fulham looking to kill off the first half, the home side had one final roll of the dice when a dangerous Gareth Barry corner found Carew in the middle of the area. The towering front man proceeded to thud a header against the angle of the goal frame.

Second Half Action

48 mins
Diomansy Kamara came desperately close to handing Fulham a two-goal lead when he saw his effort beat Scott Carson and rebound off the post and roll across the goal line. It was a well crafted move from Fulham which saw Healy hold up play well before passing to Dempsey who provided Kamara with the chance.

50 mins – Aston Villa Goal – Young
Villa were soon on level terms thanks to, without doubt, the home side’s most lively player, Ashley Young. The attacker had been a thorn in Fulham’s side all match and he finally made the breakthrough when he cut in from the left and beat Keller with a fierce shot at the near post.

59 mins
The goal set the Whites back on their heels momentarily and Villa seized on the opportunity to put Fulham to the sword. Playing full of confidence, Young was looking to take on his opposing number at every opportunity. However, Villa’s next chance of the game fell to substitute Luke Moore whose on-target shot forced an excellent reaction save from Keller.

67 mins
The Whites were certainly living life on the edge as Villa continued to pepper crosses into the area. In an attempt to get his side back on the front foot, Lawrie Sanchez replaced David Healy with Collins John.

70 mins – Red Card – Chris Baird
Fulham were reduced to ten men as the match approached its final stages. Once again, it was that man Young who was the architect of Fulham’s problems. Baird’s clearance fell to Young on the left wing and he raced towards Fulham’s goal. The former Watford man was brought to ground on the edge of the area by Baird, who received his second yellow card of the game. Moritz Volz was brought on for Kamara as Fulham reshuffled, leaving only Collins John up front.

82 mins
Collins John got his first sight of goal when Moritz Volz sprinted past Bouma and rolled the ball into the path of John who struck the side netting from a narrow angle.

87 mins
Clint Dempsey almost put the Whites back in front against the run of play when he rose highest at the far post to send a powerful header in on goal. Unfortunately for the Whites, Carson had scampered across his line to block the effort.

90 mins - Aston Villa Goal - Maloney
With just four minutes on injury time to play, the home side snatched all three points through substitute Shaun Maloney. The former Celtic player latched on to a through ball and calmly placed his finish past the advancing Kasey Keller.
