First team coach Ray Lewington has taken temporary charge of Fulham as the search for a new manager begins, and his first game saw the Cottagers lose 5-1 to Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

First Half Action

Spurs got Wednesday's Boxing Day derby underway at White Hart Lane. Ray Lewington's side started the contest in a 4-5-1 formation and made a bright start to the game.

3 min Tom Huddlestone got the home crowd excited early on with a sweet reverse pass to sent Berbatov clear. With his back to goal Huddlestone's pass cut through Fulham's back line but the pace of the ball beat Berbatov.

6 min Fulham looked comfortable in possession and dominated the midfield battle in the opening period. Fulham's midfield five linked up well and Dempsey fired in Fulham’s first shot on goal from Smertin's pass. Dempsey's 25 yard effort flew high over Robinson’s bar but a positive start from Lewington’s side. Fulham were well organised and quick to apply pressure on the home side in the early stages of the game.

23 min Malbranque's right footed cross from the left flank found Berbatov in a central position 12 yards from goal. The striker rose above Hughes to send the ball goalwards but Niemi was alert to the danger and dived to his right to save on the far post. Berbatov’s effort was Spurs first clear effort on goal.

26 min Goal Spurs. The home side earned a free-kick just inside Fulham’s half. A deep ball into the area was half-cleared to Malbranque. The midfielder fired in a right footed volley across goal which smashed against Niemi’s post. The ball flew out to Keane and the striker made no mistake with his finish. Spurs 1-0 Fulham.

34 min Fulham applied their first phase of pressure following the home side’s opener. Baird sent in a deep cross which Robinson failed to catch cleanly under pressure from Kamara. Seconds later Davies sent in a 25 yard shot which flew over the keeper’s bar. Fulham were forced to play with ten men moments later when Dempsey required treatment after suffering a blow to the face.

42 min Fulham earned three successive corners before the break but once again Spurs caught the visitors on the break. The home side were most effective down the left flank, with Malbranque proving a menace with his probing runs.

45 min Dempsey set up Fulham’s final attack of the half. Some neat footwork from the US international in the middle of the park afforded him the time and space to thread a pass through to Kamara. The striker turned on goal and fired in a 25 yard effort but the ball sailed harmlessly over Robinson’s cross bar.

45 min Goal Spurs. As the game moved into stoppage time Spurs doubled their lead thanks to Tom Huddlestone’s drive. Spurs broke down the left flank and the ball was played across goal to Huddlestone. The midfielder’s low drive lacked any real venom or precision but Niemi was caught off guard and Spurs went two goals to the good. Seconds later Referee Marriner blew for half-time. Spurs 2-0 Fulham.

Second Half Action

Ray Lewington made two changes for the second half. The injured Chris Baird was replaced by Moritz Volz at right back and Hameur Bouazza was introduced on the left flank in place of Seol Ki-Hyeon. Lewington’s revised line-up moved into a 4-4-2 formation.

50 min After a quiet opening period to the game White Hart Lane roared with approval following a superb piece of attacking football. King, Berbatov and Keane linked up superbly to put the pressure on the visitors but the attack lacked an end product.

53 min Hameur Bouazza didn’t take long to show his pedigree on the wing, creating Fulham’s first attack of the second period. Bouazza drifted down the flank and sent in superb cross, forcing Robinson to come off his line and make a diving save. Moments later Robbie Keane came close with a rasping 25 yard effort after turning Hughes.

60 min Goal Fulham! The Whites pulled one back on the hour mark. Bouazza attacked Spurs down the left flank and sent in a low cross. Confusion reigned in the area and Dempsey was on hand to capitalise and bring the Whites back into the game. The striker stroked the ball home and into an empty net from eight yards.

61 min Goal Spurs. Barely a minute after Fulham’s goal Spurs made it 3-1. The home side earned a corner and the set piece was headed towards the far post by Berbatov. Robbie Keane was lurking on the far post and poked the ball home into an empty net.

63 min Both sides made simultaneous substitutions. For Spurs Boateng replaced Berbatov and Ray Lewington introduced David Healy for Aaron Hughes.

67 min Moritz Volz was booked for tripping Aaron Lennon as the winger burst down the left flank. Spurs next substitution came in the form of Jermain Defoe, on for marksman Robbie Keane.

70 min Goal Spurs. Huddlestone grabbed his second of the game with a right footed volley. Lennon created the opportunity after bursting down the right flank and his pass inside found Huddlestone who was clinical with his finish into the far corner of the net. Spurs 4 – 1 Fulham.

75 min Spurs introduced their third and final substitution of the game with fifteen minutes remaining, introducing Taarabt for captain Ledley King.

83 min Simon Davies was booked for a late challenge in the middle of the park before Moritz Volz was dismissed for his second bookable offence following a late challenge on Steed Malbranque. Volz had been booked earlier in the half for a challenge on Lennon and the Whites were reduced to ten men for the remaining minutes of the game.

89 min Goal Spurs. The home side made it 5-1 right at the death. Huddlestone dribbled into the area and Defoe latched onto his touch and sent a right footed shot across Niemi and into the corner of the net from eight yards. After three minutes of added time Referee Marriner blew for full time.
