Goals from Simon Davies, Clint Dempsey and David Healy give Fulham an emphatic victory over Reading down by the Thames on Saturday afternoon.

First Half Action

9 mins
This eagerly anticipated encounter got off to something of a slow start with the visitors immediately looking to draw Fulham’s sting by maintaining possession without posing any real threat to Antti Niemi’s goal. For their part, the Whites were looking to utilise the pace of Bouazza and Kamara to get in behind the Royals’ back line.

16 mins – GOAL FULHAM – Simon Davies
With the match yet to establish any real pattern Fulham took the lead through the in-form Simon Davies. Having momentarily upped the pressure, Fulham forced a sequence of corners which resulted in Dave Kitson’s headed clearance falling into the path of Davies who duly volleyed home low and hard with the outside of his boot. The strike took the Welsh winger’s record to two goals in two games.

21 mins
Davies popped up again, this time on the left flank just after the 20 minute mark as he looked to add to his tally by attempting to curl a shot past Hahnemann from the edge of the area, unfortunately his effort was charged down.

23 mins
The goal certainly looked to have invigorated Fulham as an attacking force as Dempsey and Kamara linked up with a one-two of the highest quality, setting the Senegal striker away down the right channel.

35 mins
Dejan Stefanovic entered the referee’s book on 35 minutes when he attempted to halt Stephen Hunt’s progress as the Reading attacker quickly sprinted through Fulham’s midfield.

42 mins
Having already collected a yellow card, Stefanovic was walking a thin line when on 42 minutes the referee indicted he was nearing a second caution following a foul.

Second Half Action

45 mins
The Whites started the second half under the ominous shadow of the statistic which placed the Whites at the top of the Premiership’s first half league table. Indeed, Reading had the ball in the net soon after the restart but Michael Duberry had already incurred the linesman’s flag.

54 mins - GOAL READING – Kevin Doyle
The match entered a frenzied period with both sides going close to netting. First the visitors forced Niemi into a fine save when he had to stretch fully to his left to beat out a free kick which was heading inside the far post.

Almost immediately Fulham constructed a flowing one-touch counter-attack which spanned the length of the pitch and resulted in Simon Davies’ cross-shot narrowly evading Diomansy Kamara.

The action swiftly returned to the other end where Reading won a corner following a shot from Stephen Hunt. The set piece was curled to the far post by Nicky Shorey where Doyle was on hand to nod in from close range.

60 mins – Fulham Substitution – Bouazza OFF Kuqi ON
Lawrie Sanchez introduced Shefki Kuqi, the bustling Finnish striker, in place of Hameur Bouazza. The change saw Clint Dempsey move out to the left flank and Kuqi join Kamara up front.

65 mins
With Kuqi up front Fulham now had a physical presence at the very least equal to that of Reading’s centre back pairing of Sonko and Duberry.

66 mins – Fulham Substitution – Kamara OFF Healy ON
Fulham second change of the encounter saw David Healy replace Kamara, giving the Whites a more traditional looking strike pairing.

68 mins
Antti Niemi once again was on top form as he kept his eye on a swirling free kick to parry the ball out for a corner.

71 mins – GOAL FULHAM – Clint Dempsey
Fulham’s changes up front had the desired effect as both David Healy and Shefki Kuqi played a major hand getting Fulham back in the lead. Davies fed the ball to Healy and the Northern Ireland international turned and delivered a well-weighted cross to the back post. Kuqi overpowered Sonko in the air and Dempsey was on hand to prod the knock-down past Hahnemann.

80 mins
The Craven Cottage faithful were showing an admirable level of vocal support for the Whites and they sought to help the team though the final ten minutes. With Reading looking to bombard the Whites’ back line, Kuqi had dropped back and was playing as an auxiliary defender.

85 mins
Fulham missed a golden opportunity to extend their lead when Healy set the excellent Davies free down the right wing. With Kuqi free in the middle and time to pick his pass, Davies’ cross was low and just behind its intended target.

90 mins – GOAL FULHAM – David Healy
Fulham scored their third of the day when Kuqi, Davies and Healy linked up to great effect.

The ball was cleared following a Reading attack to Kuqi who flicked a ball into the path of Davies who made rapid ground down the right wing before feeding a perfect cross to Healy who expertly side footed home.
