A first-half strike from Ivan Klasnic was enough to book Bolton a place in the Quarter-Final of the FA Cup after a scrappy encounter at Craven Cottage.

Fulham welcomed Bobby Zamora back, with the Fulham striker being named on the bench for the first time since recovering from injury as Fulham looked to book their place in the Quarter-Final of the FA Cup sponsored by E.ON. Zoltan Gera also returned to the starting line-up, replacing Damien Duff on the right flank.

There were precious few goal scoring opportunities in opening 45 minutes of this encounter, with Bolton working effectively in midfield, closing down space and looking strong in defence. The Whites certainly had the upper hand in the possession stakes but were unable break through the Trotters’ back line.

Mousa Dembele forced Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan into making an early save after running on to Clint Dempsey’s flicked header. But the Trotters’ custodian was able to divert Dembele’s left-footed effort behind for a corner.

Andrew Johnson just failed to reach a teasing low cross from Zoltan Gera on 12 minutes as Fulham maintained their bright start to the match.

But against the run of play Bolton took the lead in the 19th minute after the Whites struggled to clear their lines. Brede Hangeland’s header dropped at the feet of Ivan Klasnic 12 yards out and his volley flew past Mark Schwarzer’s outstretched hand and into the net.

Bolton looked determined to hang on to their lead despite ever-mounting Fulham pressure. By the half-hour mark the Whites had registered four corners to none from Bolton. However the Bolton defence stood firm with David Wheater and Gary Cahill dealing with crosses particularly well.

The Whites started the second-half full of intent – Mousa Dembele saw two shooting opportunities fall his way early on, with one flying over the bar and his second producing a comfortable save from Bogdan.

With possession switching all too regularly, it was Fulham who were able to attack with greater speed having after regained the ball, unfortunately there was still precious little space in which to work.

Chris Baird and Martin Petrov both entered the referee’s book after an off the ball confrontation - as an element of needle started developing. But Baird’s booking did little to quell his determination in the tackle, the Northern Ireland international produced a solid stop to clear the danger when Kevin Davies looked ready to shoot.

Mark Hughes introduced Bobby Zamora to the action on 67 minutes in place of Zoltan Gera. As a result of the substitution, the Whites switched to a 4-3-3 formation with Johnson, Zamora and Dembele leading the line.

Mark Schwarzer produced an impressive reaction save on 73 minutes when he pushed away Klasnic’s snapshot but that proved to be an isolated incident as, for the large part, the action remained at the other end of the pitch.

Clint Dempsey headed over from a Danny Murphy cross as the games entered its closing stages and Fulham increased the pressure. Chris Baird then glanced a header wide on 86 minutes from another Murphy corner.

Bolton were desperately hanging on and only a last-ditch intervention from Gary Cahill after a dangerous run from Steve Sidwell set up an opportunity for Dempsey. Moments later Adam Bogdan raced off his line to deny Zamora a good chance.

With the clock running down, Fulham tried valiantly to find an equaliser but there was no way through a resolute Bolton back line on the day.
