A dramatic last gasp equaliser from Brede Hangeland earned the Whites a share of the points after Villa took the lead in the first-half with a goal from Marc Albrighton.

Mark Hughes elected to keep with the same starting line-up that put in such a good performance against Wigan the previous weekend.

Carlos Salcido was tested early on when he had to expertly snuff out a dangerous Aston Villa counter-attack by intercepting a final pass from Stewart Downing. The action immediately switched to the other end where Clint Dempsey and Simon Davies linked up well in a move which resulted in Davies clipping a cross for Zoltan Gera to head straight at Brad Friedel.

Both sides were showing their attacking intent early on; the Whites looked dangerous playing intricate passes around the Villa penalty area whilst Gerard Houllier’s men were looking to attack primarily down the flanks.

Nathan Delfouneso flashed a header wide of Mark Schwarzer’s left hand post on 15 minutes as Villa started to enjoy some success from out wide.

Davies and Dempsey linked up well once more on 18 minutes, allowing Dempsey good sight of goal, unfortunately the American attacker saw his shot well saved by Friedel. Gera fired the rebound over.

The action continued at a furious pace, making for a hugely entertaining half. Nigel Reo-Coker had to come off for Villa after landing awkwardly after going up for a header with Jonathan Greening.

The pace finally settled down and with neither side fully having the upper hand, the game continued to rest on a knife-edge. Barry Bannan saw his attempted effort safely caught by Mark Schwarzer whilst Mousa Dembele fired over from eight yards after excellent work in the air from Zoltan Gera won the knockdown.

Mark Schwarzer came to the Whites’ rescue on 40 minutes when he saved well at his near post after Luke Young was able to break free. Nathan Delfouneso followed up by heading over the bar from close range. That opportunity was only a warning sign as Villa took the lead from their next attack in almost identical circumstances. Marc Albrighton was played in behind Fulham’s back line before turning inside Carlos Salcido to place a finish past Schwarzer.

The second-half got off to a tense start, with Aston Villa looking to build on their lead, rather than just protect it. Nathan Delfouneso found himself in a surprising amount of space on 53 minutes when a Barry Bannan pass found him unmarked in a central position. Fortunately the Villa striker fired a tame shot straight at Mark Schwarzer.

Mark Hughes made his first substitution of the match on 57 minutes when an apparently injured Chris Baird made way for Stephen Kelly. Hughes’ second change of the match came just a minute later when Jonathan Greening came off for Andrew Johnson. The substitution saw Simon Davies take up a central midfield role and Mousa Dembele move out to the left flank, leaving Johnson and Dempsey leading the line.

Fulham were forced into the making a final change when Carlos Salcido was on the receiving end of a hard challenge from Luke Young on 66 minutes. Damien Duff replaced the Mexico international at left-back.

Andrew Johnson caught his first sight of goal on 73 minutes when he cut in from the left tested the hands of Brad Friedel with a low shot. Johnson was then sent clean through on 81 minutes but was unable to take the ball round the grounded Brad Friedel, who was able to stick out a hand and stop Johnson’s progress.

Brede Hangeland popped up late in injury time to net the equaliser following a wonderfully flighted free kick from Danny Murphy.
