Fulham and Norwich City will meet again in the FA Cup with Budweiser after drawing 1-1 at Carrow Road.

Fulham and Norwich City will meet again in the FA Cup with Budweiser after drawing 1-1 at Carrow Road.

The stalemate was a fair reflection of the Third Round tie in which both teams played positively, creating chances aplenty.

It was Fulham who took the lead when Darren Bent glanced in an excellent cross from Chris David, although Norwich were level five minutes later through Robert Snodgrass.

Both teams had chances to win the game, with the Canaries coming closest when Ricky van Wolfswinkel’s header was kept out by a simply world class David Stockdale save.

René Meulensteen used the game as an opportunity to blood some of the Club’s youngsters, with Dan Burn and David handed debuts, while Ange-Freddy Plumain and Lasse Vigen Christensen were named on the bench. Elsad Zverotić, Derek Boateng and Bent were also given chances to impress from the off, while Clint Dempsey made his second debut for the Whites.

A dangerous ball into the away box in the first minute had to be dealt with by Burn at the near post, and the imposing centre-back did well to avert the danger at the expense of a corner which came to nothing.

Norwich had started confidently and saw the game’s first attempt whistle over in the third minute when Josh Murphy tried his luck from just outside the area.

Fulham grew into the game thereafter and within seven minutes the shot count was level as Dempsey picked the ball up and crashed a dipping effort in from 25 yards, but like Murphy’s it flew a yard over the crossbar.

Johan Elmander then caused concern for Fulham fans when his low strike sailed marginally wide of the far post after he’d collected the loose ball following a blocked effort from David Fox, with Murphy drawing a comfortable save from Stockdale moments later.

Murphy was proving a real nuisance down Norwich’s left flank and Stockdale had to be alert on the quarter hour mark to hold his vicious low cross after the winger had beaten Zverotić.

It was already proving to be an end-to-end contest, with Alexander Kačaniklić then drawing a brilliant fingertip save from Mark Bunn after Steven Whittaker had done well to block his initial shot.

After a quiet period by both sides, Pajtim Kasami showed good skill in the 26th minute to evade two Norwich challenges before dragging a right footed effort wide of Bunn’s far post.

A loose Kasami pass was then intercepted by van Wolfswinkel who fed Martin Olsson down the left, but his shot was deflected behind by Aaron Hughes.

The Whites were then presented with arguably the game’s best chance in the 28th minute when Kasami sent Bent through one-on-one but the striker shot too close to Bunn on his weaker left foot and the Canaries keeper saved easily enough.

It was an entertaining Cup tie and Kačaniklić went close after connecting brilliantly with the ball to rifle in a strike from 25 yards, with the effort whistling a foot wide of the post.

Murphy demonstrated that he’s got plenty to offer with either foot in the 39th minute when he bent in a nice strike with his right boot, with Stockdale doing well to repel the strike.

It was a save that proved vital as Fulham then took the lead just seconds later. David sent over a delicious inswinging cross that Bent rose highest to connect with ahead of Bunn to send a header into the back of the net.

Norwich would have been level shortly after, though, were it not for the reflexes of Stockdale. The former Ipswich Town loanee getting down expertly to deny van Wolfswinkel after the Dutch striker had swiveled and unleashed a goalbound effort.

But the Canaries did draw level on the stroke of half-time, with their most potent attacker Murphy providing the assist. He burst into the area and left Zverotić in his wake before sending over a low cross that Snodgrass stooped to head beyond Stockdale, although the keeper almost managed to keep it out.

The Whites pushed for another goal in the one minute of stoppage time and forced a corner which culminated in an acrobatic Bent attempt that was claimed by Bunn.

Meulensteen opted for a change at the break, as Plumain came on for his Fulham bow in place of Kačaniklić.

The second period began at a frenetic pace, with a combination of Dempsey and Fernando Amorebieta almost forcing a David corner in, before Fox sliced wide at the other end.

A sublime Boateng pass found Zverotić down the right after the full-back had made a good run in the 50th minute. His cross was met by Plumain but the young winger was on the way down when he connected with the ball and so he was unable to direct it towards goal.

Murphy then tried to squeeze an effort inside the far post after he’d broken at speed, but after opening his body up his shot lacked accuracy and dribbled two yards wide.

A flashed Olsson cross on 56 minutes was met by the leaping van Wolfswinkel but he was unable to control his header and Stockdale was left untroubled.

Stockdale was certainly troubled moments later but the stopper pulled off one of the saves of the season to keep the scores level. This time van Wolfswinkel did everything right to direct his header downwards and inside the far post, but Stockdale got down fantastically to push the effort away.

A contentious free-kick was awarded Norwich’s way in the 67th minute after Hughes was adjudged to have knocked his man off the ball. The home fans thought Snodgrass has successfully dispatched the set-piece but in fact it had nestled into the side-netting.

Another youngster entered the action for his Fulham debut with 20 minutes remaining, as Vigen Christensen came on for Boateng. John Arne Riise came on at the same time in a straight swap at left-back for Amorebieta.

Nathan Redmond had been a pest in the league game between the two sides on Boxing Day and the winger – who had come on earlier as a substitute – drew a strong hand from Stockdale with his cross-cum-shot 77 minutes in.

Fulham threatened a minute later when Burn met David’s corner, but he was unable to get over it and Bunn collected as the header looped into his arms.

Chris Hughton then withdraw the impressive Murphy with 10 minutes left, as the winger was replaced by his twin brother, Jacob, who sent a decent strike wide within four minutes of coming on.

Neither side were content to settle for a Replay, with the two Barclays Premier league outfits each enjoying spells of pressure in the closing stages, with Redmond and Kasami each going close before the final whistle was blown.
