Bryan Ruiz made a goalscoring return to Costa Rica as Fulham began their tour in style with a convincing victory over C.S. Cartagtinés.

Bryan Ruiz made a goalscoring return to his homeland as Fulham began their Costa Rica tour in style with a convincing victory over C.S. Cartaginés.

The national team captain seized his chance to score against Costa Rican opposition for the first time since leaving hometown club L.D. Alajuelense seven years ago, and received a standing ovation for his efforts.

Dimitar Berbatov had put the Whites in the driving seat with a first-half double, one close-range poacher's effort and one trademark nonchalant penalty, before Martin Jol rang the changes.

By full-time, 22 players had been used as the Manager ensured as many members of the squad as possible got valuable minutes under their belts on their journey towards peak fitness.

The tour kicked off with a bang in the impressive Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica, with brass bands and drumming troops providing the soundtrack to a carnival of dancers in national dress.

Manager Jol selected a vastly experienced starting line-up for the overcast and humid conditions, but also handed opportunities to Pajtim Kasami and Buomesca Tue Na Bangna to impress.

With strong local support, Cartaginés, decked out in a patriotic blue, red and white strip, showed intent from the off with the impressive Leandro Silva drilling wide before setting up Terencio de Oliveria to shoot at David Stockdale.

The Whites had created the opening chance, with John Arne Riise bombarding down the left and crossing for stand-in captain Berbatov, who forced a fine save from Wardy Alfaro with his header.

Kasami let fly from distance, his shot only just evading the crossbar, and then some silky skills by the Swiss attacker allowed him to slide in John Arne Riise, but the left-back could only hit the side-netting.

Stockdale was forced to react quickly to save from Andres Montero’s powerful header, but that was as close as the Costa Ricans came before Fulham took the initiative.

Springing a counter-attack from deep, Damien Duff found Kasami charging forward on the left flank. He then produced a fine piece of skill to pass his marker and put the ball on a plate for Berbatov to slot home.

And the Bulgarian took only five minutes to make it two, producing a typically cool finish from the penalty spot after Riise again caused havoc, twisting and turning into the box to draw a foul.

There were nine half-time changes, with first appearances in White for Derek Boateng and Fernando Amorebieta, while Maarten Stekelenburg took his place for his debut between the posts.

Stekelenburg soon produced a superb fingertip save from sub Felix Montoya’s curling free-kick as Cartaginés searched for a route back into the game.

The returning Ashkan Dejagah seemed invigorated, defying the humidity with lung-busting runs, and Alex Kačaniklić sliced a good opening wide from local hero Ruiz’s cross.

Fulham controlled the closing stages and it could have been four when Kačaniklić freed an unmarked Rodallega at the far post but the Colombian could not control his strike.
