Fulham were held to a 1-1 draw by a strong Real Betis side in the Whites’ penultimate pre-season friendly of the summer at Craven Cottage on Monday night.

The Whites took the lead in the 13th minute when Steve Sidwell met Bryan Ruiz’s corner to nod powerfully home.

But Betis levelled 10 minutes into the second half when Nosa Igiebor fired home from close range.

Bryan Ruiz saw strong penalty claims waved away and Hugo Rodallega also saw an effort disallowed for offside as the Whites had to settle for a share of the spoils against their Spanish counterparts.

Martin Jol named a strong starting XI for the fixture including the three summer signings of Maarten Stekelenburg, Fernando Amorebieta and Derek Boateng. Stekelenburg was named between the sticks, behind a back four of Sascha Riether, Brede Hangeland, Amorebieta and Kieran Richardson. The midfield consisted of Ruiz, Sidwell, Boateng and Ashkan Dejagah, with Dimitar Berbatov and Rodallega up front.

After a frantic start, Stekelenburg raced off his line to beat Verdu to a throughball early on, before the first opening of the game for Fulham came in the 10th minute when Dejagah played Rodallega in down the left. The striker cut inside but seemed to get caught in two minds, eventually electing to pass to Ruiz, with a Betis defender getting in to nip the ball off the Costa Rican’s toes.

Fulham were in front in the 13th minute, though. After Rodallega had seen a free-kick deflected just wide, Ruiz’s resulting corner was met by the unmarked Sidwell on the edge of the six-yard box and the midfielder headed powerfully into the far corner to give the hosts the lead.

Rodallega saw a shot deflected wide in the 32nd minute after Riether’s scuffed cross had only been cleared as far as the Fulham forward, while a rare Betis effort saw Juanfran’s speculative drive go well over. On the stroke of half-time, Verdu met Javier Chica’s corner but his header was off target.

There were no changes by Jol for the start of the second half and the Whites found themselves back on level terms in the 54th minute when Igiebor bundled his way into the box, played a one-two with Juanfan and fired past Stekelenburg from six yards.

Less than 60 seconds later Fulham felt they should have had a penalty when Ruiz appeared to be tripped in the box, only for referee Lee Probert to award the visitors a free-kick and hold a lengthy conversation with the Whites star.

Stekelenburg then did well to hold a fierce Verdu shot, before Rodallega turned home a Riether cross on the hour mark only to be ruled offside. On 65 minutes the impressive Dejagah made way for Damien Duff. Boateng and Rodallega were replaced by Giorgos Karagounis and Buomesca Tue Na Bangna respectively shortly afterwards.

Pajtim Kasmi was introduced for Ruiz and Duff forced a good save from close range in the 81st minute when he met Berbatov’s pull-back, before Betis substitute Braian Rodriguez blazed over at the other end. The same player then headed Chica’s cross inches wide of the far post, before Riether was replaced by Aaron Hughes.

Karagounis almost grabbed a late winner when his drive from distance was pushed around the post by Stephan Andersen but a draw was a fair result.
