Fulham went down to a 4-0 defeat at Anfield for the second season in a row on a disappointing day for the Whites.

An own goal by Fernando Amorebieta, a Martin Skrtel header and a brace from Luis Suarez saw Fulham go down to a 4-0 defeat at Anfield for the second season in a row.

A good spell by Fulham was ended in the 23rd minute when Amorebieta turned a Steven Gerrard free-kick into his own net. And the hosts increased their advantage soon afterwards when Skrtel headed a Gerrard corner home.

Suarez made it 3-0 before half-time when he raced onto Jordan Henderson’s throughball to score. And the lively Liverpool marksman added a second just after the break when Gerrard caught Kieran Richardson in possession and teed up his teammate to fire home.

It capped a miserable afternoon for Fulham as the Whites slumped to a fourth successive defeat in all competitions.

Fulham boss Martin Jol made two changes from the side that lost 3-1 at home to Manchester United last time out. Elsad Zverotić came in for the suspended Sascha Riether, who sat out the first match of his three-game ban, while Alexander Kačaniklić, Fulham’s scorer against United, replaced Bryan Ruiz.

After a minute’s silence to mark Remembrance Day, Liverpool won an early corner which eventually resulted in Daniel Agger firing over from eight yards. The home side’s early pressure continued, with Suarez forcing Maarten Stekelenburg to save low down in the sixth minute after a neat move involving Gerrard and Philippe Coutinho.

At the other end, a quick break by Fulham in the 15th minute saw Dimitar Berbatov spray the ball out wide to Ashkan Dejagah. The winger pulled it back for Zverotić whose cross to the far post was met by Pajtim Kasami. The midfielder chested the delivery down and saw his shot deflect off Glen Johnson and into the side-netting.

A good spell for Fulham saw Berbatov collect Kasami’s pass and hit an effort with the outside of his boot straight at Simon Mignolet in the 21st minute. But 60 seconds later Liverpool were in front. Gerrard whipped in a free-kick from the right and as Suraez leapt to meet it he missed his header and the ball went in off the unfortunate Amorebieta.

Scott Parker went into the book in the 24th minute to pick up his fourth booking of the season after cynically chopping down Gerrard from behind as Liverpool looked to break - but it was 2-0 moments later. The Reds won a corner and Gerrard’s delivery was attacked at the near post by Skrtel who beat Amorebieta to the ball to head powerfully home.

Liverpool saw strong penalty claims waved away four minutes later when Henderson’s cross hit Richardson, before Stekelenburg did brilliantly to tip a fierce effort from Coutinho over the bar. From the corner, Coutinho saw a shot deflected into the grateful arms of the Fulham goalkeeper.

It was 3-0 to Liverpool on 36 minutes, Henderson playing in Suarez to race beyond the flatfooted Fulham defence and slot past a helpless Stekelenburg.

Jol made a change for the start of the second half, with Ruiz replacing Kačaniklić, but Liverpool should have been 4-0 up within a minute of the restart. Suarez forced Stekelenburg to save with his feet from close range, with Daniel Sturridge picking up the rebound and firing towards goal. The Dutch stopper made a fine one-handed save but the ball fell to Suarez who blazed over from five yards.

The onslaught continued and Sturridge fired wide after twisting past Amorebieta and Richardson then made a good tackle to deny the in-form Liverpool man a shooting chance just inside the box. But the Fulham defender was at fault for Liverpool’s fourth when he dawdled in possession and Gerrard nipped in to nick the ball and release Suarez to fire past Stekelenburg at his near post.

Fulham saw penalty claims waved away on 55 minutes when Dejagah went down under a challenge from Aly Cissokho after racing onto a Berbatov pass. Aaron Hughes replaced Zverotić on the hour mark in Jol’s second substitution of the afternoon.

Stekelenburg made a fairly comfortable save from Coutinho on 71 minutes after Suarez had wriggled into space and teed up his teammate. Jol made his final change of the day, replacing Berbatov with Giorgos Karagounis, before the referee brought a disappointing day to an end for the Whites.
