A stoppage-time header by Darren Bent saw Fulham snatch what could prove to be a precious point at Old Trafford.

A stoppage-time header by Darren Bent saw Fulham snatch what could prove to be a precious point at Manchester United on Sunday.

Two goals in as many minutes looked set to send the Whites to defeat but substitute Bent headed in from close range in the 94th minute after Kieran Richardson’s shot had been parried by David De Gea and looped into the striker’s path.

Fulham had earlier stunned Old Trafford when Steve Sidwell sneaked in beyond the United backline to volley in Lewis Holtby’s sublime pass and put the visitors in front in the 19th minute.

Richardson then blazed over with just De Gea to beat after being teed up by Muamer Tanković, before Maarten Stekelenburg kept Fulham’s lead intact with saves from Ashley Young, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney.

But United’s pressure eventually told as Van Persie tucked home a Juan Mata cross from close range in the 78th minute and little more than 60 seconds later, Michael Carrick saw a shot take a nick off William Kvist and fly beyond Stekelenburg.

With the Whites heading for what looked like a plucky defeat, Fulham grabbed a draw in the dying seconds. Sidwell played in Richardson who got beyond Nemanja Vidic and fired in a shot which De Gea could only push into the path of Bent to nod in from just a few yards out.

Head Coach René Meulensteen made four changes to the team that lost 3-0 at home to Southampton last weekend. John Heitinga and Ryan Tunnicliffe came in for their Fulham debuts, while there was also a start for John Arne Riise and a full league debut for Tanković. The latter led the line, with Holtby slotting in just behind. Richardson was on the left of midfield, with fellow ex-United man Tunnicliffe on the right.

United made the early running, with Dan Burn doing well to head a dangerous Young cross clear. Sascha Riether then made a superb tackle on Van Persie as the Dutchman shaped to shoot after collecting Young’s pull-back.

But it was Fulham who went in front in brilliant fashion in the 19th minute. Riise beat Juan Mata to a ball on the half-way line and fed Holtby. The German held up play before clipping the ball forward to find Sidwell who had ghosted in beyond the United defence. Sidwell met the pass first time to hit a low side-footed volley past De Gea for his seventh goal of the season.

United could have levelled almost straight away when the unmarked Van Persie met Rafael’s cross to the far post but blazed high and wide from just four yards out.

With 27 minutes player, a Mata cross was met at the back stick by Young but his close-range header was parried away by Stekelenburg. Carrick then saw a long-range volley dip just wide after Riether had headed a Rafael delivery from the right clear.

For all United’s dominance, it could - and probably should – have been 2-0 to Fulham in the 37th minute. A Young corner was cleared by Richardson allowing Tanković to break in a two-v-two situation with Holtby in support. Richardson ran the length of the pitch to join the attack and was found on the overlap by Tanković but, with just De Gea to beat, the winger shot high over the bar.

The miss nearly came back to haunt Fulham. A goalmouth scramble in the away side’s box eventually saw the ball fall to Carrick whose fierce drive was palmed away by Stekelenburg. The rebound was met by Van Persie who saw his shot deflected inches over the bar by Sidwell. It was the final noteworthy action of the first half.

Meulensteen made a change for the start of the second 45, with Bent replacing Tanković.

Sidwell blazed over from distance, before Stekelenburg kept Fulham in front in the 55th minute. Young fed Patrice Evra on the overlap and his cross was parried into the path of Mata by Stekelenburg. The Spaniard teed up Rooney whose effort from six yards was brilliantly tipped over the bar by the big Dutchman.

The hosts saw penalty appeals fall on deaf ears when Van Persie claimed Burn had handled in the box, before David Moyes introduced Adnan Junuzaj into the fray for Darren Fletcher in the 61st minute in a move that saw Rooney drop into a deeper midfielder role.

Fulham’s second substitution of the afternoon saw Scott Parker replace Tunnicliffe in the 65th minute and United made a double change shortly after as Antonio Valencia and Javier Hernandez came on for Rafael and Young.

United were continuing to dominate as Fulham got everyone back behind the ball. With 13 minutes left, Riise did well to block a Van Persie shot from just outside the box, before Parker made a similarly brave tackle on Rooney.

But United's pressure eventually told in the 78th minute. Evra’s cross was only cleared as far as Mata who hit a first-time volley across the face of the goal where the waiting Van Persie stroked home from two yards.

And two minutes later, Fulham were behind. Junuzaj’s cross was hooked away by Richardson but only as far as Carrick who took a touch before hitting a shot from the edge of the box that clipped Kvist and flew into the top left-hand corner of Stekelenburg’s net.

Larnell Cole replaced Kvist in the aftermath for his Whites bow, before Mata shot just wide in stoppage time. Van Persie chipped over when in a good position but with the final whistle seconds away, Bent headed home to secure Fulham what could be a huge point in their fight for survival.
