First-half goals from Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez saw Fulham go down to a disappointing defeat at Southampton on Saturday.

After Fernando Amorebieta had cleared an early Morgan Schneiderlin shot off the line, the Saints went in front in the 20th minute when Lambert lost his man at a corner to head in. Lambert then hit a post before Rodriguez made it 2-0 just before the break, nodding in from close range.

The Whites were improved after the break but, in truth, never really threatened Artur Boruc’s goal and after back-to-back wins, the loss brings Fulham firmly back down to earth with a bump.

Fulham boss Martin Jol made one change from the team that thumped Crystal Palace 4-1 at Selhurst Park on Monday, with Amorebieta replacing the injured Brede Hangeland. Dimitar Berbatov took the armband in Hangeland’s absence.

The Saints should have gone in front in the fourth minute. Philippe Senderos was caught in possession by Adam Lallana but the midfielder saw his cross palmed away by Stekelenburg. The ball fell to Schneiderlin whose first-time shot from the edge of the box was cleared from close to the line by Amorebieta.

Victor Wanyama saw a long-range effort fizz just wide on 17 minutes but the Saints were soon in front. A corner from James Ward-Prowse was flicked on by Rodriguez and Lambert lost his marker to head home powerfully at the far post.

It was almost 2-0 less than 60 seconds later when Rodriguez ran from the halfway line and bundled his way through a host of Fulham players all too easily but saw his low shot tipped around the post by Stekelenburg.

Southampton continued to be in firm control of the game and Lambert picked up a loose ball, shifted it onto his right foot but saw his 20-yard shot take a nick off Scott Parker and crash off the far post.

With six minutes left of the half, the dangerous Ward-Prowse found Lambert with a cross to the far post but this time the England international’s header was pushed away by Stekelenburg.

A second Saints goal seemed inevitable and it came with three minutes of the half remaining. Lallana’s cross to the far post was met by Lambert who nodded it back across goal where the waiting Rodriguez couldn’t miss, beating Senderos to the ball and heading in from four yards out.

Jol made a change at the break, bringing on Aaron Hughes at right-back in place of Sascha Riether. Wanyama headed a good chance wide in the early stages of the second half, while Pajtim Kasami produced one dangerous cross from the right that Berbatov couldn’t quite control. But Fulham were still struggling to create anything, with Boruc untested in the Southampton goal as the clock ticked into the 60th minute.

Rodriguez was inches away from adding a third for the hosts when he met Ward-Prowse’s cross but saw his spectacular scissor-kick fly just wide of Stekelenburg’s left-hand post.

Fulham were showing signs of improvement and Jose Fonte did well to clear a cross from Darren Bent over the bar under pressure from Steve Sidwell in the 73rd minute. Bent made way for Hugo Rodallega shortly afterwards, with Alexander Kačaniklić coming on for Bryan Ruiz with nine minutes left.

Sidwell hooked a half-volley wide when a Fulham corner was only half-cleared, with the Whites man booked late on for dragging back Wanyama. Hughes turned a Lallana shot onto the roof of the Fulham net in the 89th minute. The Northern Irishman was then shown a yellow card in stoppage time for hauling down Luke Shaw, before the final whistle brought a frustrating afternoon to an end for Fulham.
