A stunning injury-time strike by Jordon Mutch saw Fulham suffer a 2-1 home defeat to Cardiff City on Saturday.

A stunning injury-time strike by Jordon Mutch saw Fulham suffer a 2-1 home defeat to Cardiff City on Saturday.

After Scott Parker had limped off early on, Steven Caulker put Cardiff in front in the 12th minute, heading home Peter Whittingham’s corner.

Whites substitute Bryan Ruiz hauled Fulham level just before the break with a wonderful effort from distance.

But Cardiff substitute Mutch was to have the final say in proceedings in the last minute of injury time, firing a brilliant shot from 25 yards past a helpless David Stockdale to snatch the win for the Bluebirds.

Martin Jol made five changes from the team that faced Everton in midweek in the Capital One Cup, with Sascha Riether, Fernando Amorebieta, Kieran Richardson, Steve Sidwell and Darren Bent all starting.

The Whites made a bright start and Bent’s low cross was claimed by David Marshall early on, before Jol was forced into an early change when Parker limped off in the sixth minute. The summer signing, so influential since his switch from Tottenham Hotspur, was replaced by Giorgos Karagounis.

And Fulham’s afternoon got even worse when Cardiff went in front in the 12th minute in their first real attack. The Bluebirds won a corner which Whittingham took. The former Aston Villa man’s delivery was met perfectly by Caulker who rose above Sidwell to send a powerful header from eight yards past Stockdale.

Another Cardiff corner caused more problems moments later and Sidwell had to nod clear from close to the line after Andrew Taylor’s header bounced towards goal.

Richardson fired wide on his right foot in the 20th minute after an Alexander Kačaniklić cross had only been half-cleared. At the other end, a Whittingham free-kick was met by Ben Turner who saw his header palmed over the bar by Stockdale. The resulting corner found an unmarked Turner lurking at the far post but he could only send his header into the side-netting. It was an excellent chance for the visitors.

Fulham were almost level on the half-hour mark. A long punt forward by Stockdale was controlled by Dimitar Berbatov who teed up Karagounis. The midfielder let fly from 25 yards but saw his fizzing shot tipped brilliantly round the post by Marshall.

The first booking of the game went the way of Cardiff’s Kevin Theophile-Catherine in the 32nd minute for pulling back Kačaniklić as the Swede looked to break.

Fulham were struggling to get a foothold on the game and Jol made what appeared to be a tactical change in the 40th minute, with Ruiz, back from injury, replacing Kačaniklić.

And the Costa Rican had an almost immediate impact, collecting Sascha Riether’s in-field pass and sending a delicious curling shot over a stranded Marshall.

Cardiff should have gone back in front in the 57th minute when substitute Mutch sent a low ball across. Fraizer Campbell got in front of Brede Hangeland but could only turn his effort over the bar from six yards. At the other end, Pajtim Kasami sent a right-footed effort wide, before Whittingham blazed over from 20 yards as Cardiff broke.

Fulham’s best move of the game so far came in the 61st minute. Bent controlled Ruiz’s pass and found Riether down the right. The German’s cross was met by Berbatov at the back stick but the striker nodded wide from a tight angle. Berbatov went into the book three minutes later for treading on the toe of Theophile-Catherine.

Fulham were playing three up front now and Ruiz teed up Kasami on 68 minutes but the Swiss midfielder side-footed his effort straight at Marshall with his weaker right boot.

Fulham could have won it with seven minutes to go. Kasami burst forward but opted to shoot instead of playing in Berbatov and his effort was blocked by Turner. Bent was replaced shortly afterwards by Adel Taarabt in Jol’s final throw of the dice.

Richardson saw a cross flash across the face of the goal in stoppage time, while Nicky Maynard forced Stockdale into a late save.

But there was still even more drama to come when Mutch controlled a long ball forward and unleashed a superb left-footed drive into the far corner of the net from 25 yards to win it for the Bluebirds.
