Andre Schurrle hit a hat-trick as Felix Magath’s first home game in charge of Fulham ended in defeat to SW6 rivals Chelsea.

Felix Magath’s first home game in charge of Fulham ended in defeat to SW6 rivals Chelsea.

The Whites, who lost Brede Hangeland to injury early on, were the better side in the first half. But they were undone by a 17-minute hat-trick from Andre Schurrle after the restart as the German beat the offside trap three times to score.

John Heitinga pulled one back for the Whites in the 74th minute with his first goal for the Club but it proved to be no more than a consolation as Fulham fell to defeat to remain rooted to the foot of the Barclays Premier League table.

Magath made three changes to the side that drew 1-1 at West Bromwich Albion last weekend for the top-versus-bottom clash. In came Clint Dempsey for the final appearance of his loan spell, with the American joined in the starting XI by Pajtim Kasami and Darren Bent. The trio replaced Fernando Amorebieta, who was injured, and Lewis Holtby and Hugo Rodallega who dropped to the bench. Kieran Richardson moved to left-back.

In bright sunshine at the Cottage, Fulham created the first opening of the game in the second minute. Kasami got past Branislav Ivanovic down the left but his cross was just too high for Dempsey who arrived unmarked but could only head wide from six yards out.

Play was held up in the seventh minute after a nasty clash of heads between Hangeland and Richardson. The skipper required treatment but was eventually deemed okay to continue.

Maarten Stekelenburg gave everyone a scare in the 13th minute when his clearance was charged down by Fernando Torres. The Chelsea striker latched onto the loose ball but could only send his shot wide from a tight angle. Before play could restart, Dan Burn replaced Hangeland who was clearly still feeling the effects of his collision with Richardson.

A quick break by Fulham in the 20th minute saw Kasami feed the overlapping Richardson who burst forward. His cross to the far post was controlled on his chest by Dempsey but Cesar Azpilicueta got back to put the ball behind as the Fulham man shaped to shoot.

Ashkan Dejagah went into the book in the 35th minute for catching Azpilicueta, before Gary Cahill made a last-ditch tackle to deny Dempsey a shot on goal from eight yards as he turned and span after collecting Scott Parker’s pass.

Fulham were by far the better side at this point against a somewhat lacklustre Chelsea side. Kasami sent a low free-kick under the Chelsea wall in the 40th minute but his effort was held by Petr Cech.

Just before the break a Chelsea clearance only went as far as Parker. He played it out wide to Dejagah who tapped it back for Sascha Riether to deliver a cross which was met at the back stick by Steve Sidwell. The midfielder took a touch but sliced his half-volley wide of the far post.

In stoppage time in the first half, Torres was found lurking at the back post by a deep free-kick but his fierce drive was palmed over the bar by Stekelenburg in what was the final action of the opening 45 minutes.

Kasami was booked in the early stages of the second half before Chelsea saw a chance go begging when Eden Hazard skipped past several Fulham players and found Schurrle. He elected to shoot instead of passing to the unmarked Torres and Heitinga bundled the ball behind.

But the visitors went in front in the 52nd minute. Hazard clipped a ball over the top of the Fulham defence and Schurrle beat the offside trap to race clear and slot past the outrushing Stekelenburg.

It was almost 2-0 in the 58th minute. Hazard showed brilliant skill to get down the left before sending in a Rabona-style cross to the far post where Torres rose to meet it but could only put his close-range header behind.

Holtby entered the fray for Kasami just after the hour mark, but Chelsea increased their advantage in the 65th minute. Scrappy play by the Whites saw them give the ball away to Hazard. He played a slide-rule pass to Schurrle who sent a left-footed effort past Stekelenburg.

Schurrle was looking for a hat-trick and a good block from Riether in the 66th minute denied his German compatriot. But it was soon 3-0 - and it was that man Schurrle again. A long punt forward was contested by Torres and Heitinga with the ball falling kindly for the Spaniard who sent Schurrle clear. With just Stekelenburg to beat, he made no mistake to seal his treble.

Fulham got themselves back in the game in the 74th minute. Holtby’s corner was turned back across goal by a stretching Bent where Heitinga couldn’t miss from a couple of yards out.

Parker made way for Giorgos Karagounis in the 79th minute and the Greek almost made an instant impact with a low drive from the edge of the box which was held by Cech.

The Whites finished the game strongly but Chelsea could have added a fourth in injury time when substitute Demba Ba broke and forced a save from Stekelenburg. The rebound fell to Ramires but he blazed his effort over the bar. Fulham have 10 games left to secure survival.
