Fulham slipped to the bottom of the table after a fourth successive league defeat.

Fulham slipped to the bottom of the table after a fourth successive Barclays Premier League defeat.

Three goals in 11 second-half minutes floored the Whites. First Adam Lallana fired home Rickie Lambert’s pass in the 64th minute. Lambert then got on the scoresheet himself when he met Nathaniel Clyne’s low cross in the 70th minute. And five minutes later Jay Rodriguez broke away before curling an effort beyond Maarten Stekelenburg.

There had been little sign of what would unfold in the second half after Fulham had enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the opening 45 minutes. Brede Hangeland saw a header brilliantly scooped away by Artur Boruc who also made two good saves to deny Darren Bent.

But Saints were a different side after the break and the defeat for Fulham, coupled with Cardiff City’s home win over Norwich City, saw the Whites sink to 20th place.

Fulham boss René Meulensteen made four changes to the side that lost at Swansea City on Tuesday. The Head Coach handed debuts to new signings William Kvist and Lewis Holtby as well as recalling Damien Duff and Darren Bent. Holtby started on the right with Kvist, Steve Sidwell and Scott Parker in the middle and Duff on the left.

After a minute’s applause to mark the passing of former Fulham Director and Club Historian Dennis Turner, Fulham got things under way, kicking towards the Putney End in the first half.

Dan Burn rose at the far post to head a Holtby corner onto the roof of the net in the eighth minute, before a low Rodriguez cross at the other end was sliced towards his own goal by Sidwell. Thankfully, for the Fulham skipper, Stekelenburg was able to grab the ball at the second attempt.

Rodriguez went into the book for catching Sidwell in the 16th minute, before Parker dragged a shot well wide from 20 yards after a poor clearance by Boruc had gone straight to the Fulham man.

A superb one-handed save by Boruc kept the scores level in the 24th minute as he clawed away Hangeland’s header after the defender had met a Holtby corner from the right. A minute later, Victor Wanyama was shown a yellow card for a poor challenge on Parker as the Whites looked to break.

Boruc twice thwarted Bent to keep Saints in it in the 35th minute. First he palmed away Bent’s volley after Parker had flicked a Holtby pass into the striker’s path. Seconds later, Sidwell’s slide-rule pass presented Bent with another chance but his angled drive was saved by the legs of Boruc.

Three minutes before half-time a rare Saints attack ended with Rodriguez heading José Fonte’s cross wide.

The first incident of the second half saw Morgan Schneiderlin send an acrobatic overhead kick over the bar after controlling a Lallana cross on his chest. Lallana then forced Stekelenburg into a save in the 58th minute, with the midfielder’s long-range effort held by the Dutch stopper.

And Southampton’s second-half dominance was rewarded when they went in front. Lambert, playing in a deeper role, was found in space and his pass freed Lallana just inside the left-hand side of the box. There was still a lot to do for the Saints man but he took a touch and fired a left-footed shot that flew low and true past Stekelenburg’s outstretched hand and in at the far stick.

Meulensteen responded by replacing Duff with Clint Dempsey but moments later a Schneiderlin header from a Saints corner was cleared from near the line by Sascha Riether.

It was 2-0 to the visitors in the 69th minute. A well-worked move saw substitute Clyne get down the right before his low cross was met in the middle by Lambert who arrived unmarked to slot home from six yards.

Parker made way for Pajtim Kasami in the 73rd minute but things got even worse for Fulham 90 seconds later. A Fulham attack broke down and a hopeful ball forward was picked up by Rodriguez on the left flank. With Hangeland backing off, Rodriguez cut inside before curling a right-footed effort beyond Stekelenburg and into the far corner of the net.

Kvist was replaced by Muamer Tanković with seven minutes remaining and Saints were content to see out the final stages as Fulham suffered a damaging defeat.
