An 83rd-minute strike by substitute Darren Bent earned Fulham a crucial 1-0 win over Stoke City at the Cottage.

An 83rd-minute strike by substitute Darren Bent earned Fulham a crucial 1-0 win over Stoke City at the Cottage.

With the game heading for a draw, the on-loan Aston Villa man showed his predatory striking prowess hasn’t left him when he collected a deflected Pajtim Kasami cross and slotted past Asmir Begovic.

The Whites had been somewhat fortunate to be in front by then, with Stoke seeing two strong penalty claims turned down, while Robert Huth twice had efforts cleared off the line by Sascha Riether.

Bryan Ruiz also had penalty claims waved away in the first half but an improved Fulham snatched the precious three points when Bent fired home.

Martin Jol made four changes from the side that lost 2-1 to Cardiff City last weekend. Philippe Senderos replaced Kieran Richardson, with Fernando Amorebieta switching to left-back, while the injured Scott Parker made way for Giorgos Karagounis. Damien Duff replaced Alexander Kačaniklić on the left, with Ruiz starting in place of Bent.

With the home crowd in good voice, the Whites made a bright start. They also weren’t afraid to get stuck in, with a few challenges not going down particularly well with former Whites boss Mark Hughes, now, of course, in charge of Stoke.

Fulham were extremely fortunate not to concede a penalty on 16 minutes. Stephen Ireland got away from Senderos down the left and cut inside. The Swiss defender got back and slid in, appearing to bring Ireland down. Referee Roger East, however, pointed for a goal-kick rather than a spot-kick.

Stoke then saw further penalty claims turned down in the 26th minute when a stumbling Amorebieta brought down Jonathan Walters in the box, with East claiming the offence had started outside the box. Amorebieta, no stranger to a yellow card during his time in Spain, was booked for his troubles. The free-kick led to a corner from which Huth’s header was nodded off the line by Riether.

The Whites were living dangerously and, with 30 minutes gone, had yet to test Begovic, with Steve Sidwell blazing over from distance after good play involving Pajtim Kasami, Dimitar Berbatov and Duff. Sidwell later nodded a looping Kasami cross onto the roof of the net.

In first half injury time, Fulham were denied a penalty of their own when Ruiz tumbled in the box under a challenge from Marc Wilson before a half lacking in quality - but not effort - came to a close.

Jol was forced into a change at the break, with Richardson replacing Brede Hangeland for the start of the second half. The switch saw Amorebieta move to centre-back and Berbatov taking the Captain’s armband.

Huth headed a Matthew Etherington corner over early into the second 45. At the other end, Berbatov saw weak penalty claims rightly waved away after tumbling theatrically under a challenge from Huth.

With chances still at a premium, Jol made a change just before the hour mark, replacing Karagounis with Derek Boateng. Stockdale made his first save of the match on 64 minutes, comfortably collecting a shot from Marco Arnautovic.

Berbatov, who appeared to have picked up a knock, made way for Bent on 66 minutes, and Stoke should have gone in front moments later when Stockdale missed a delivery from a corner but Huth headed over. Just 60 seconds later, Ireland fired wide with a volley after meeting Oussama Assaidi’s cross from the left.

With 10 minutes left, Riether cleared off the line for a second time after Huth met an Ireland corner. And the Fulham man then almost put the Whites in front less than a minute later, robbing Assaidi of possession and running the length of the pitch but seeing his shot tipped around the post by Begovic.

The game was suddenly an end-to-end affair and Fulham went in front in the 83rd minute when Kasami’s cross was deflected into the path of Bent who took a touch, dummied Begovic and a Stoke defender and slotted into the empty net for his third goal since joining the Whites in August.

Stoke returned to the long ball team of old as they sought an equaliser but Fulham held on to secure three much-needed points.

  • 5 With the Whites enjoying much of the early possession, Karagounis almost catches out the high Stoke defensive line with a searching ball towards Duff, but the Irishman cannot quite keep it in play.
  • 2 Ruiz gets the first sight of goal but it's quickly charged down. Looks like Duff is playing left, Kasami right and Bryan central.
