Fulham secured a first win under Kit Symons on Tuesday when they defeated Doncaster Rovers 2-1 in the Capital One Cup.

Fulham secured a first win under Kit Symons on Tuesday when they defeated Doncaster Rovers 2-1 in the Capital One Cup.

The Whites dominated the first half at Craven Cottage and deservedly took a two goal lead into the break courtesy of efforts from Bryan Ruiz and Dan Burn.

But the visitors responded well in the second half and got back into contention through James Coppinger.

They then squandered a great chance to equalise when they were awarded a contentious penalty following an apparent handball by Tim Hoogland, but Marcus Bettinelli kept Theo Robinson’s spot-kick out to ensure the Whites’ presence in the Fourth Round.

Symons said prior to the game that he would field a strong side, and he was true to his word, making just two changes to the XI that faced Blackburn Rovers three days previously.

Nikolay Bodurov came in for the suspended Shaun Hutchinson, while Emerson Hyndman replaced the rested Scott Parker who took his place among the substitutes. Burn took the Captain’s armband in his absence.

There was almost a dream start for the Whites after just 30 seconds when Ross McCormack rode a challenge to gallop in on goal only to be denied by a decent stop from visiting goalkeeper Jed Steer.

Everyone in the ground then thought Rodallega had put his side in front on six minutes when he controlled a through ball sublimely before volleying in an effort that looked set to hit the back of the net, only to fly marginally wide.

Two minutes later a long ball up field saw Paul Keegan get beyond Burn, with Bettinelli rushing out to smother the danger. His slide caused him to accidentally drag the ball outside of the area with his arm, resulting in a free-kick on the edge of the box for Doncaster, and a yellow card for the Fulham stopper.

The visitors threatened again on 14 minutes when a free-kick from the right was worked infield to Dean Furman whose strike from 20 yards landed on the roof of the net after deflecting off Hyndman. The resulting corner found its way back to Furman but he drilled his strike some way wide.

But the Whites were the ones to break the deadlock in fine style two minutes later with a goal made in the Americas. Venezuela’s Fernando Amorebieta drilled an inviting diagonal ball into the box towards Colombian Rodallega who laid it off for Costa Rica captain Ruiz to place high into the net first time.

Rovers looked for an immediate response and Cedric Evina’s deep cross from the left was met at the far post by Furman who was unable to direct his header back across goal.

A second Fulham goal nearly arrived shortly before the half hour mark when Kostas Stafylidis thumped one in from 25 yards but Steer was fortunate that no-one was able to follow up as he beat the powerful effort away.

But the home faithful didn’t have to wait long for another as Burn headed in his first goal for the Club on 32 minutes. A short corner routine resulted in McCormack whipping in a delicious cross that Burn nodded down and into the corner of the net. His celebration told the full story of what that meant to our stand-in skipper.

To try and change the flow of the game, Doncaster manager Paul Dickov introduced Robinson and Harry Forrester at half-time, in place of Kyle Bennett and Richie Wellens.

It worked in so much as Rovers had the first decent chance of the second half 10 minutes after the restart. Nathan Tyson showed Burn a clean set of heels but dragged his shot wide under pressure from the Whites Captain.

But on the hour mark they were right back in contention. Coppinger found space inside the area and cut back inside before lashing in an effort with the outside of his right foot that curled away from Bettinelli and into the far side of the goal.

With the deficit now halved, the visitors sensed an opportunity and searched for a quick equaliser that nearly arrived when Forrester burst into the box and forced a low save from Bettinelli.

Symons made his first change of the game on 70 minutes – a straight swap as Sean Kavanagh took Amorebieta’s place at left-back.

Forrester – who had certainly made an impression since coming on – then made sure Bettinelli was alert with a curling shot from the edge of the box. Our number 40 claimed comfortably, though.

Rodallega then had a sight of goal at the other end, but his swinging effort flew wide of the far top corner.

Scott Parker then came on to shore up the midfield, taking the place of Stafylidis.

On 78 minutes referee Kevin Friend awarded the visitors a penalty – one that seemed harsh as Hoogland was about a yard away from Robinson when the substitute headed the ball against his arm. The striker stepped up to take the spot-kick himself but Bettinelli made a world class save to get down low to his left and push the ball away to preserve Fulham’s lead.

Symons then made his final change of the evening as Ruiz made way for George Williams.

When Hyndman won a free-kick 25 yards from goal with four minutes remaining, McCormack almost had the result sewn up when his set-piece was flying in, only for Steer to make a fine fingertip stop to deny him.

In the 89th minute Doncaster made their final alteration as Liam Wakefield came off for Jamie McCombe, with the big centre-back taking up a position up top.

Just as five minutes of stoppage time were announced, it became quickly apparent that there’d actually be significantly more added minutes after Tyson needed extension treatment following a coming together with Bettinelli. The Rovers striker was unable to continue and his side played out the remainder of the tie with 10 men.

They were given a final chance when they were awarded a free-kick 30-odd yards from goal but Forrester smashed his effort straight into the wall.

A slick counter attack then saw Rodallega set Williams free but a great recovery from a Rovers defender saw him rob the ball at the last – an action which proved to be the final one of the game as the Whites held on for a first win under Caretaker boss Symons.
