Fulham were undone by a rampant Derby after Moussa Dembélé's goals were cancelled out by five strikes in 16 minutes.

Fulham were undone by a rampant Derby County after Moussa Dembélé’s double was cancelled out by four goals in 15 second-half minutes.

The 18-year-old took advantage of a pair of defensive howlers from Craig Forsyth and Omar Mascarell and added composed finishes to put the Whites two goals ahead.

But Chris Martin converted a penalty with the final kick of the first half to put a dent in Fulham’s lead and Johnny Russell fired County level two-minutes after the re-start.

With the Rams on a roll, Simon Dawkins hammered in a long range shot on 54 minutes, and the midfielder added a second to make it five on 65 minutes after Jeff Hendrick’s goal.

It left a mountain too high for the Whites to climb as the Sky Bet Championship leaders progressed to the last eight of the Capital One Cup.

After a busy period in the fixture list, Caretaker Manager Kit Symons made eight changes to the team which beat Charlton 3-0 on Friday, with 20-year-old Stephen Arthurworrey making his senior Whites debut.

Four of last season’s FA Youth Cup Final team came in, Emerson Hyndman, Patrick Roberts, George Williams and Dembélé. They were complimented with the added experience of Elsad Zverotić and goalkeeper Gabor Király, while Shaun Hutchinson started alongside Arthurworrey in central defence.

From the opening whistle, the visitors stated their intention to control possession, moving the ball swiftly, but Williams’ direct running caused them a problem on two minutes. His quick feet drew lured Mascarell into a late tackle and Hyndman bent the 22-yard free-kick over the wall and narrowly wide.

Stretching the play, the Rams put over a couple of testing crosses but Hutchinson and Arthurworrey dealt well with the early danger, before Martin worked Király with a low drive from 20 yards.

The Whites soon had their first effort on goal, when Roberts opened up the burners in the ninth minute, dribbling with pace at the Derby penalty area, before squaring the ball for Dembélé to lash a shot at goalkeeper Kelle Roos.

Roos was at full-stretch to stop the Whites taking the lead, blocking Dembélé’s strike low down after the Frenchman collected Zverotić’s pass and smartly turned his marker. And Roos was worked for a third time inside 14 minutes, holding the ball well after Sean Kavanagh’s drilled corner was powered at goal by the towering Arthurworrey.

The Whites kept the pressure on, as Tim Hoogland won possession and Williams raced at goal after an excellent exchange between Bryan Ruiz and Roberts. The Welsh international’s shot was goal-bound until it was blocked by County skipper Richard Keogh, before Derby showed signs of life when Jeff Hendrick’s deflected shot sailed just over Király’s crossbar.

Lively widemen Williams and Roberts switched sides on 22 minutes, and a superb piece of build-up play ended when Hyndman’s strike was well blocked, but the Whites got the goal they deserved moments later. It was the chance they had to work least for, when Forsyth’s under-hit back-pass was seized by Dembélé, and he calmly rounded Roos and slotted into an empty net to score his first senior goal for Fulham.

The visitors responded in a positive manner, pinning the Whites back for a spell, and Russell was centimetres away with a curling shot across goal from 15 yards. Russell had a golden opportunity to equalise on 40 minutes when Derby carved open Fulham’s defence but Király made himself big to block the six-yard strike.

The Whites punished Derby again on the stoke of half-time following another error. This time Mascarell was dispossessed by Ruiz on the edge of his own area and Dembélé stroked the ball past Roos with the whole of the goal to aim at.

But Fulham couldn’t hold on to the two-goal lead until the interval, as hand-ball was given against Hoogland following a whipped free-kick and Martin stepped up to hammer the spot-kick past Király.

Derby’s first goal was the last kick of the first half and the Rams were level less than two minutes after the re-start, when Dawkins charged to the byline and pulled the ball back for Russell to slam in a close-range shot.

With all the momentum in Derby’s favour, Dawkins collected Craig Bryson’s pass and cut in from the left to angle a fizzing drive into the top corner of the Whites’ net on 54 minutes.

The Rams tried to turn the screw with Hendrick rifling a shot at Király, before Ruiz was upended a yard outside the penalty area but the Costa Rican, and Whites Captain for the night, could not quite curl his free-kick on target.

Fulham were in trouble as Hendrick made it four from close range on 62 minutes after Forsyth’s dangerous ball across the box, and three minutes later Dawkins back-heeled in his second from Russell’s cross.

Dembélé saw a chance for a hat-trick go begging after Ruiz’s clever flick and Zverotić could not connect at the far post after the French striker headed square across goal.

Ross McCormack and Chris David replaced Williams and Roberts on 72 minutes, but the damage had already been done. Russell's low drive was hacked away from goal by Hutchinson to prevent another goal, as the Whites were eliminated from the Capital One Cup.
