Hugo Rodallega’s strike earned Fulham their first Sky Bet Championship victory of the season as the Whites came from behind to beat Birmingham City.

Kit Symons was in the dugout for his first away match since taking over as Caretaker Manager, and his side returned to the dressing room a goal down at half-time after David Cotterill’s 38th minute wonder-strike.

But a spirited second-half effort sparked the revival, with Tim Hoogland bundling in a scrappy close-range effort to pull Fulham level on 63 minutes.

Rodallega was the winning goal-scorer when the Whites last won away in the league, coincidentally in Birmingham, in the 2-1 triumph at Aston Villa on April 5th, and the Colombian was the hero once again, powering in a 71st minute decider to lift Fulham off the foot of the table.

The Whites had started well and tested Darren Randolph in the Blues goal early. Paul Robinson fouled Ross McCormack and the Scottish striker stung the keeper’s hands from the 35-yard dead ball.

It took little time for the Blues to stamp their mark on the game, when Mark Duffy threaded in Cotterill, but the Welshman steered his shot across goal and wide.

There was little between the sides in the opening 20 minutes, with both defences dealing well with any attacks. A deflected, looping Lasse Vigen Christensen cross almost caught out Randolph as he scampered back towards his goal-line.

But Symons’ men managed to up the tempo, with Hoogland breaking away on the overlap. His inviting cross sat up perfectly but Rodallega’s overhead kick attempt was slightly mistimed and dropped harmlessly wide.

In response, the hosts created a good chance on 22 minutes, and it was Clayton Donaldson’s turn to mistime his finish. A six-yard header from Cotterill’s cross was glanced centimetres wide with Marcus Bettinelli rooted to the spot.

The Whites’ approach play was silky but the final pass often left them wanting, while Blues’ direct approach was causing problems, such as when Jonathan Ground’s six-yard header flashed wide of goal from another teasing Cotterill delivery.

Cotterill’s crossing had been excellent but it was when he started shooting that Birmingham’s fortunes changed. After a spell of possession, the Welsh attacker took aim and curled an unstoppable 30-yard effort into the inside side-netting of the Whites’ goal.

Bettinelli was helpless on the goal but he was responsible for keeping the Whites in touching distance at half-time, flinging himself across to parry Ground’s 25-yard shot.

Konstantinos Stafylidis replaced Emerson Hyndman at the interval, with the Whites seeking to get back into the game but Fulham were soon again relying on Bettinelli to keep them in it.

On 59 minutes, with the Whites putting on the pressure, Fernando Amorebieta’s cross was blocked and Blues broke away. Substitute Brek Shea bore down on goal but Bettinelli’s fingertips restricted the home side to a corner.

It proved to be a crucial save as, four minutes later, the visitors were level. A Fulham corner was only half-cleared and, reacting to Niko Bodurov’s deflected 40-yard drive at goal, Hoogland collected a loose ball and bundled it past Randolph from six yards.

A golden opportunity went begging moments later, when Rodallega fed McCormack and, after riding one tackle, he could only side-foot at the keeper from close range.

That shaky moment for Blues led to another, as Rodallega beat Randolph to a loose ball and rifled a strike past the prone keeper from an acute angle to put Fulham ahead.

It was the Whites who created the better chances once ahead, with Rodallega seeing two good opportunities to extend the lead blocked by keeper Randolph, and Dan Burn heading over from a corner.

Shea and Cotterill failed to trouble Bettinelli with the Blues pushing forward and McCormack should have put the game beyond doubt after receiving a square ball from Rodallega, but another goal was not necessary as the Whites held on to secure their first league win in 13 matches.
