Matt Smith’s early strike sent the Whites on their way to earn three crucial points at Blackpool.

Matt Smith’s early strike sent the Whites on their way to earn three crucial points at Blackpool.

The Fulham target man dispatched Sean Kavanagh’s left-wing cross in the eighth minute to give the Whites an advantage they retained to go further clear of the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone.

The victory leaves Kit Symons’ men 18th in the table, and nine points ahead of 22nd-placed Millwall, who have three matches left to play and an inferior goal difference, by 10 goals, as Fulham approach the brink of mathematical safety.

There were few clear-cut chances on a difficult playing surface at Bloomfield Road, as Symons’ team held on to a slender lead to defeat his former teammate Lee Clark’s rock bottom, and already relegated, side.

Re-shaping his midfield for the trip to Lancashire, Symons recalled Kavanagh and Tim Hoogland to take up the wide midfield berths. Bryan Ruiz dropped to the bench, while Scott Parker missed out with a knock suffered against Rotherham, but still travelled with the Team.

Both teams wore black armbands in respect to former Blackpool player Bill Ronson, who had recently passed away, and the attendees of Bloomfield Road participated in a minute’s applause prior to kick-off. The travelling Fulham faithful were in good voice from the off on a sunny spring afternoon by the seaside, but the Whites on the much-maligned pitch were slower to settle.

Two golden opportunities fell to Henry Cameron inside the first five minutes as the Tangerines carved the visitors’ defence open but the 17-year-old, making his ninth career appearance, lacked the composure to punish a flat-footed Fulham defence.

Twice the youngster burst free of the Whites back-line. His first effort was a scuffed shot across Marcus Bettinelli’s goal which re-bounded back of the post, fortunately, to safety. A minute later he was through again, and this time he found the target. Bettinelli spread himself well and blocked the 18-yard strike.

By the eighth minute, Blackpool were paying the price for those missed opportunities. Kavanagh trapped the ball on the left and instantly looked for Smith in the middle. The delivery was a peach, the finish even smoother. From 12 yards, the 25-yard-old diverted the ball right into the corner of Ell Parish’s goal with a perfectly-placed glancing header.

After the Whites’ defence stood strong to deny David Perkins a clear-cut opening, Smith began causing havoc in the hosts’ penalty area, first firing over from Ross McCormack’s 14th-minute right-wing cross and then heading off target from Kavanagh’s in-swinging corner. On both occasions he perhaps should have tested back-up goalkeeper Parish, standing in for the injured Joe Lewis.

There was almost a mix-up at the opposite end in the 22nd minute when Burn anticipated Bettellini would collect a through ball, and the call never came. The towering defender sliced his clearance up into the air, Bettinelli parried it, but the Whites escaped with Andrea Orlandi ready to pounce.

As Blackpool grew into the game, Fulham were pegged back for a spell. Michael Turner was booked for a foul on Perkins and Jamie O’Hara’s free-kick crashed in the wall. Right-back Tom Barkhuizen sliced a 25-yard shot over on 31 minutes, and Jazz Richards was forced to clear from inside his six-yard box after another miscommunication between Bettinelli and a defender.

Fulham were digging in as the clock ticked towards half-time, dealing well with any danger Blackpool posed without offering a significant threat in reply, as the cut-up pitch began to impact the flow of play. McCormack began to cause problems on the counter-attack, running half the length of the field to stretch the Tangerines on 41 minutes, before winning a free-kick in a promising position off O’Hara’s push. This time Kavanagh just failed to find the imposing Smith at the far post.

That turned out to be Smith’s last meaningful action, as the forward was replaced five minutes into the second half after going down holding his leg. Cauley Woodrow joined McCormack up front. Sensing one less man-marker on the field, the next Blackpool corner was dropped into the six-yard box and, after Bettinelli punched the ball away, O’Hara rattled in a volley which flew fractions over the crossbar.

Woodrow had his first sight of goal on 54 minutes, but could not keep his header on target from McCormack’s delivery. He came even closer on 57 minutes, darting in to meet Kavanagh’s terrific driven cross from six yards out, but a diving Parish diverted the ball away from his out-stretched toe.

With the ball bobbling around the uneven surface, players from both teams were beginning to struggle with their timing. James Husband powered into the area but saw penalty appeals turned away, before Dan Burn got his challenge just right at the other end to halt O’Hara’s advances. McCormack did excellently to hold the ball up and bring Danny Guthrie and Woodrow into play on the hour. Guthrie passed on a left-footed strike and eventually Woodrow sliced wide as the chance passed the Whites by.

Blackpool boss Clark made his first switch shortly afterwards, Niall Maher replacing Barkhuizen at right-back and Orlandi was substituted for Dom Telford on 68 minutes, after Burn had reacted well to charge down the Spanish wingers’ 10-yard half-volley.

Nathan Delfouneso was brought on for Perkins on 77 minutes as the Tangerines sought to force the issue, and the substitute almost made an instant impact. A physical challenge left Bettinelli unable to secure a clean catch, and the substitute rolled the ball towards an empty net before Richards came to the rescue at the last second to hack the ball off the goal-line.

That hearts-in-mouths moment prompted a nervous last ten minutes for the Whites, with Blackpool regularly dropping long balls into the Fulham penalty area as the Whites struggled to keep hold of possession.

Not even a short cameo from a burly man in a long blonde wig and a pink silk dress could ease the tension. He was quickly removed by stadium stewards as Fulham fans saw the funny side, starting a chant of ‘sign him up’, before the announcement of four minutes added time turned the atmosphere back to 'serious' again.

Camped deep inside their own half, Fulham soaked up the pressure and should have sealed the game more comfortably when McCormack released Woodrow, until a hefty bobble carried the ball away from him and towards goalkeeper Parish. Moments later, Telford took aim from 25-yards and Bettinelli pulled out an excellent diving save to finally secure what should prove to be a vital victory for the Whites.
