Battling Fulham picked up a precious point with a 1-1 draw against Charlton at The Valley.

Battling Fulham picked up a precious point with a 1-1 draw against Charlton Athletic at The Valley.

After a fine start by the visitors, Ross McCormack put the Whites in front in the eighth minute, nodding Matt Smith’s flick-on over the onrushing Stephen Henderson.

Henderson then made a fine save to deny Tim Hoogland but Charlton levelled in the 16th minute when Johann Gudmundsson arrived unmarked at the far post to fire home.

Gudmundsson missed a sitter 11 minutes later from even closer in, before Smith fired wide and McCormack forced Henderson into a good save with a free-kick.

The second half was a less open affair but Tony Watt went close for Charlton on three occasions, before substitute Bryan Ruiz and Smith sent late efforts wide as the sides settled for a share of the spoils from an entertaining London derby.

Fulham boss Kit Symons made five changes to the side that lost 4-1 at home to Brentford on Good Friday as Hoogland, Dan Burn, Scott Parker, Sean Kavanagh and Smith came into the starting XI in a flat 4-4-2. Ruiz was back amongst the substitutes.

The Whites had a couple of early breaks that could have led to more. Ryan Tunnicliffe got in down the right in the fourth minute as it became two-v-one but his cross for Kavanagh was slightly behind the young Irishman and Charlton recovered. James Husband then skipped past Joe Gomez down the left but saw his low cross held by Henderson.

But the Whites were in front in the eighth minute. A long pass forward by former Charlton man Michael Turner was flicked on by Smith and with Henderson rushing out of his net, McCormack nodded the ball over the keeper and just under the bar in front of the travelling fans behind the goal.

Five minutes later, a lovely ball by Danny Guthrie slid McCormack into the right of the area. He cut inside but saw his shot blocked by Tal Ben Haim. The resulting corner was only partially cleared and a ball back into the box was won in the air by Smith to fall perfectly for Hoogland. The German let fly but Henderson made himself big at the near post to pull off a fine save.

Out of nothing, Charlton were level in the 16th minute. An Addicks attack was cleared by Burn but Morgan Fox collected the ball and his low cross was turned home by an unmarked Gudmundsson at the back post after being narrowly missed by an equally alone Frederic Bulot. Fulham appeals for offside fell on deaf ears.

The goal put the wind in Charlton’s sails. A couple of minutes later a Gudmundsson corner was bundled towards goal, with Kavanagh reacting to clear from near the line.

Gudmundsson should have put the hosts in front in the 27th minute when he was presented with a near identical chance to his first goal but this time he hit his shot into the side-netting from just a couple of yards out after arriving unannounced at the back stick to meet a low cross from Igor Vetokele. It was a golden opportunity.

Ben Haim went into the book soon after for catching Husband out on the left-hand touchline.

A poor clearance from Henderson in the 35th minute created a chance for Fulham. His kick went straight to Parker who floated the ball towards Smith. The striker controlled it on his chest on the edge of the box before hitting a left-footed volley that flew four yards wide of the post.

On the stroke of half-time McCormack’s free-kick forced Henderson into a two-handed save before the opening 45 minutes came to an end.

Fulham almost took the lead in the opening seconds after the restart. Smith again caused problems in the Charlton area and McCormack hooked the ball towards goal where it was cleared from off the line by Gomez. Husband got to the loose ball and delivered a cross back into the box where Smith sent his header straight at Henderson.

Burn went into the book in the 57th minute for a crude challenge on Gomez. And Watt missed a good chance to put the Addicks ahead soon after. Guthrie was caught in possession by Watt and although he was tackled by Turner, the striker won it back but clipped his shot just wide of the far post. The same man then dragged a shot wide of the other post moments later. With Charlton on top, Gudmundsson let fly from 25 yards but his effort was held by Bettinelli.

With the Addicks in the ascendency, Fulham made a bold double change in the 67th minute as Ruiz and Alexander Kaĉaniklić replaced Kavanagh and a tiring Guthrie respectively.

It almost paid off immediately. Ruiz played the ball to Smith in the box and he teed up McCormack who saw his curling right-footed shot from 20 yards brilliantly tipped around the post by Henderson.

Parker, booed by the home fans throughout who still hadn’t forgiven him for his move from The Valley to Chelsea in 2004, was shown a yellow card in the 70th minute for a poor foul on Watt.

A good spell of possession by Fulham almost led to a goal in the 77th minute. Smith held the ball up for Ruiz who hit a first-time effort from just inside the box which fizzed inches wide.

Fulham then saw an attack break down and Charlton broke through Gudmundsson. He squared the ball to Watt who forced Bettinelli to scramble his shot out for a corner with a scuffed effort. It may have touched the post on its way behind.

The game was opening up. Ruiz spotted the run of McCormack with five minutes left and floated the ball towards him. McCormack missed it but Henderson had to adjust his feet to push the ball clear.

Smith could have won it late on when he latched onto a bouncing loose ball but blazed his shot high and over. In injury time, Kaĉaniklić won a free-kick just outside the box which McCormack sent a few yards wide as honours finished even. Nonetheless it was a more than useful point for the Whites in their battle to move further clear of the drop zone.
