A clinical first half display by Wolverhampton Wanderers saw Fulham fall to a 3-0 defeat at Molineux on Tuesday evening.

A clinical first half display by Wolverhampton Wanderers saw Fulham fall to a 3-0 defeat at Molineux on Tuesday evening.

The Whites went behind when Danny Batth headed in from a corner with Wolves’ first chance of the game on 10 minutes, but dominated proceedings for the following half hour.

An inability to trouble Tomasz Kuszczak in the home goal proved vital, though, as Bakary Sako grabbed two late goals to give his side a considerable advantage going into half-time.

Fulham didn’t throw in the towel and kept probing for a way back into the match after the restart but were unable to breach the Wolves goal on what was a disappointing night in the Midlands.

Kit Symons made two changes to the side that drew at Millwall three days previously, with Alexander Kačaniklić and Scott Parker dropping to the bench as Bryan Ruiz and Seko Fofana came in. Tim Hoogland made a welcome return to the squad having recovered from injury, and took his place amongst the substitutes.

After a scrappy start in which both sides were sizing each other up in midfield, it was Fulham who created the first opening on eight minutes when Ruiz and Lasse Vigen Christensen worked their way into the box with a slick one-two, but before the former could get his shot away, Wolves captain Batth made a fine block.

The home side couldn’t sufficiently clear the danger, though, and conceded a corner which eventually saw Fofana get a shot away towards goal but it was well blocked.

But despite that promising spell from Fulham, the home side took the lead with their first chance of the game when Sako whipped in a corner from the right and Batth firmly planted his header in at the near post.

Fofana looked to bring his side level a minute later when he weaved his way into the area, but he dragged his left-footed shot wide of the near post.

A nice Wanderers move on quarter of an hour almost saw them double their lead when Benik Afobe made a strong first time connection with Scott Golbourne’s pull-back, but Marcus Bettinelli made a superb save to repel his powerful effort.

Fofana was having a busy game on the right hand side of Fulham’s midfield diamond and he had the home fans worried when he fizzed in a rising strike from 30 yards that just missed the top corner of Kuszczak’s net.

An exquisite Ruiz pass then looked as though it may set Fofana up for a shooting chance on 28 minutes, but he was promptly crowded out before he could get a clean strike of the ball.

The Whites were on top in the West Midlands and believed they should have been awarded a penalty when Fofana’s shot hit the raised arm of Richard Stearman on half an hour, but the referee either didn’t see it or decided there was no offence committed.

Fofana was then involved a minute later as Fulham kept the pressure on their hosts, but his speculative effort from 20 yards was held by Kuszczak.

It should have been 1-1 on 33 minutes when a slick move involving Hugo Rodallega and Christensen culminated in a shooting chance for Ross McCormack 10 yards from goal, but he couldn’t make a clean connection and Kuszczak saved without too much distress.

It was all Fulham but with the attacking options in the Wolves team they were always going to be a threat on the break and Sako had a sight of goal on 36 minutes, but his long ranger flew some way wide.

For all the Whites’ excellent play, they lacked the finishing touch and Wolves took full advantage five minutes before half-time. Sako was allowed time to pick his spot from distance and he angled an inch-perfect shot into the far corner to leave Bettinelli with no chance.

Dicko then went close to killing the game in stoppage time but his venomous shot from a tight angle was kept out bravely by Bettinelli at his near post.

But the third goal did arrive before the half was out, with the irrepressible Sako driving in an acute strike that left Fulham with it all to do in the second half.

To their credit, they came out quickly after the break and created an opening in the Wolves box but, as was so often the case in the first half, were crowded out before someone could get a shot in.

Rodallega did get a strike away on 51 minutes from the edge of the area, but it flew way off target.

The Whites then made their first change of the game five minutes later as Fofana made way for Sean Kavanagh, before Wolves withdrew Sako for Rajiv van La Parra shortly after.

Fulham went close to pulling one back on 68 minutes when, after Rodallega had beaten Kuszczak in an aerial challenge, Christensen attempted to pop the loose ball beyond the exposed goalkeeper, but Wolves had enough defenders back to block his shot.

Wanderers then made their second alteration as James Henry replaced Dicko, before Afobe’s low effort required a brilliant one-handed save from Bettinelli.

Ruiz then sent Kavanagh in with a looped ball over the top, but the Irishman’s volley was well kept out by Kuszczak.

With nine minutes remaining, Cauley Woodrow came on for Rodallega, while Kevin Doyle took the place of Afobe.

Christensen and Kevin McDonald both had speculative efforts in the closing stages that failed to massively trouble the respective goalkeepers, as the match reached its conclusion with Wolves’ cutting edge in the first half proving the difference between the sides.
