A spellbinding Fulham display saw them secure a comfortable 4-0 win over Bolton Wanderers at Craven Cottage.

A spellbinding Fulham display saw them secure a comfortable 4-0 win over Bolton Wanderers at Craven Cottage on Wednesday.

Ross McCormack had already seen a goal chalked off for offside by the time he set Hugo Rodallega up for the opener within 10 minutes, chipping the ball into his strike partner who coolly found the corner of the net.

Fernando Amorebieta then ensured his side took a deserved two-goal lead into the second half with a bullet header in stoppage time, and the Whites maintained their rapid tempo after the restart.

Lasse Vigen Christensen swept the ball home after being found by Rodallega to all but secure the three points for Fulham, before a brilliantly taken Tim Hoogland strike – his fourth of the season – put the icing on the cake as Kit Symons’ men leapfrogged the Trotters in the Sky Bet Championship table.

Not one for tinkering, Symons made just one change from the side that defeated Birmingham City at the weekend, with Kostas Stafylidis taking Emerson Hyndman’s place in midfield – the US international dropping to the bench.

The Whites had the ball in the net as early as the fourth minute but celebrations were cut short courtesy of the linesman’s flag. A deep cross by Amorebieta was volleyed goalwards brilliantly by Bryan Ruiz – Bolton goalkeeper Andy Lonergan made a fine save to keep it out but parried only as far as McCormack, who was apparently in an offside position prior to poking the ball in, although replays disproved this theory.

But the Whites didn’t have to wait long to make the breakthrough, as five minutes later the lead was theirs. McCormack chipped a delightful ball into the box, but Matt Mills looked set to cut it out only to slip at the vital moment, allowing Rodallega to collect before calmly slotting into the corner.

Fulham were in a confident mood and almost doubled the lead moments later when Stafylidis bombed forward purposefully before letting fly from 25 yards, with a deflection carrying the ball onto the post.

Marcus Bettinelli’s goal came under threat for the first time in the 21nd minute when a dangerous Jay Spearing cross looked set to be met by Liam Feeney, only for Hoogland to make a vital intervention.

They went much closer shortly after, though, when a floated cross by Feeney from the left evaded everyone but Darren Pratley at the far post, but the former Fulham man’s volley thankfully just caressed the top of the crossbar.

Plenty of neat footwork saw Fulham create a number of openings without troubling Lonergan, but it was the visitors who had the game’s next chance in the 37th minute, although it was a wild effort by Craig Davies from 20 yards and it sailed well off target.

Ruiz was showing the sort of form that earned him an army of admirers at the World Cup in the summer, and he nearly bent in a second for the Whites on 41 minutes, but his left-footed effort from just inside the box marginally missed the far post.

The home crowd were fuming minutes later when a promising Fulham break was halted due to an apparent head injury suffered by Chris Herd. Thankfully the on-loan Aston Villa man made a miraculous recovery seconds after the referee blew his whistle.

It had been a vibrant first half display by the Whites and they got a deserved second in stoppage time. Ruiz sent an inswinging free-kick in from the right and Amorebieta was there to plant his header back across goal beyond the helpless Lonergan.

Fulham went about starting the second period as they finished the first, and Rodallega tried his luck from the edge of the box, only for a deflection to take the venom out of his effort.

Just after Neil Danns’ wild shot missed the target on 49 minutes, Bolton made a triple change as Mills, Pratley and Davies were replaced by Mark Davies, Jermaine Beckford and Joe Mason – attacking alterations by the visitors.

A breathtaking counter attack almost created a sumptuous third for Fulham in the 65th minute. After collecting a Bettinelli throw-out, McCormack advanced up the pitch and fed Ruiz down the left who played it back to him in the area with a clever back-heel. The Scottish striker saw Lonergan off his line and went for the delicate chip which didn’t quite dip in time.

But the killer goal was just around the corner, and it was absolutely sublime. Ruiz, on the halfway line, delivered an inch perfect ball down the right for Rodallega who burst into the area and squared to Christensen who side-footed home his first goal for the Club.

Bolton almost pulled a goal back moments later, though, when Davies went through on goal, only to be denied by a brilliant sliding Nikolay Bodurov tackle.

And they had an even better opportunity on 71 minutes when Feeney’s cross was met first time by Beckford who scuffed his effort wide of the far post.

Symons then made his first change of the game as Scott Parker departed to a standing ovation as he was replaced by George Williams.

The first yellow card of the game was awarded to Herd on 77 minutes when he crudely upended McCormack. During the break in play, the excellent Rodallega went off to a great reception, with Cauley Woodrow coming on in his place.

And from the free-kick, Fulham made it four. Williams squared to Hoogland on the edge of the penalty area who rifled in a brilliant first time strike across goal that kissed the post before nestling in the back of the net.

The Cottage was absolutely rocking now and as the home fans continued to celebrate, Symons made his final change as McCormack – another star man for the Whites – made way for Patrick Roberts.

Fulham were playing with a wonderful confidence in front a jubilant crowd and Stafylidis troubled Lonergan with a vicious long range strike in the 81st minute that the Trotters keeper just managed to grab hold of.

Davies then followed Herd into the book as he chopped down Roberts who was far too quick for him.

More great skill from Roberts saw him evade several challenges – despite being fouled – before sliding Stafylidis in down the left, but the Greek’s angled effort cleared the crossbar.

Roberts went close to a first Fulham goal in the 89th minute when he collected Williams’ short pass and sent in an on-target effort which was well blocked.

Bolton nearly snatched a consolation in stoppage time when Dorian Dervite headed just wide from Spearing’s free-kick, an effort that proved to be the final action of the game as Fulham secured a marvellous win – their third in a row.
