It was far from a Good Friday at Craven Cottage as Fulham fell to a 4-1 defeat by Brentford.

It was far from a Good Friday at Craven Cottage as Fulham fell to a 4-1 defeat by Brentford.

A goal in each half from Stuart Dallas had put the visitors in control of the game, but the Whites came back into it through Ross McCormack’s penalty following a foul on James Husband.

Fulham were then denied a stonewall spot-kick when substitute Matt Smith was barged over in the box, while Ryan Tunnicliffe had a goal disallowed.

With the hosts committing bodies forward, Brentford were presented with chances to break and they made sure of the win at the death through Alan Judge’s free-kick and Ramallo Jota’s tidy finish.

Kit Symons made five changes to the side that beat Huddersfield Town prior to the international break. Out went Smith, Sean Kavanagh, Tim Hoogland, the injured Jazz Richards and the suspended Shaun Hutchinson, and in came McCormack, Seko Fofana, Nikolay Bodurov and debutants Danny Guthrie and Husband.

On four minutes the first sight of goal fell to Alexander Kačaniklić who twisted and turned in the box to beat his man before firing in a shot towards the near post which was well turned behind by Brentford goalkeeper David Button.

Nine minutes later, Cauley Woodrow won possession 40 yards from goal and advanced before slipping in Tunnicliffe. The midfielder couldn’t quite get the ball under control and was robbed by a clumsy challenge that had the home fans calling for a penalty, but nothing was given.

Jonathan Douglas was then lucky to not have his name taken by referee Simon Hooper when he went in late on Husband. Fulham nearly made the resultant free-kick count, though, but the ball in was put behind for a corner before Michael Turner could poke in.

Alex Pritchard had Brentford’s first half chance on 17 minutes but his long ranger was never finding the target, before Woodrow rifled over at the other end from an acute angle.

Dallas drew a first save of the afternoon from Marcus Bettinelli after 21 minutes. It was a firm low effort but the Whites stopper got down well to save comfortably.

The winger wasn’t to be denied, though, and handed the visitors the lead on 24 minutes. He collected a pass from Jake Bidwell on the left and was allowed time to pick his spot and nestle a daisy cutter in the far corner.

The away fans thought Pritchard had doubled the lead three minutes later but his dipping free-kick missed the near post by a good couple of yards.

Patient build-up play on the edge of the Brentford box then saw the ball worked to Kačaniklić on the right, but his first time strike was just too high.

Woodrow took aim from 25 yards on 34 minutes and stung the palms of Button with a low strike. The Bees keeper couldn’t hold the effort but nobody was on hand to capitalise on the loose ball.

The Whites had two good chances in the 38th minute, first when Husband broke into the box but couldn’t get a shot away, and then when Fofana’s low effort was cleared from close to the line with Button beaten.

Fulham made a change at half-time, with Hoogland coming on at right-back in place of Jack Grimmer.

Jota was given the game’s first yellow card on 51 minutes when he stopped a Fulham attack by barging into Husband off the ball. A cynical foul by the attacking midfielder.

Dallas notched his and Brentford’s second goal on 58 minutes when he was again allowed time to pick his spot before firing a great strike into the postage stamp of the goal.

They then made their first change of the game as Pritchard came off for Judge, with Smith replacing Woodrow shortly after.

Andre Gray had a golden opportunity to put the game to bed moments later when he connected with Moses Odubajo’s cutback with the goal gaping, only to blaze miles over the bar from close range.

Fulham were awarded a way back into the match on 66 minutes when a great run by Husband was crudely halted by Toumani Diagouraga. McCormack stepped up and sent Button the wrong way to half the deficit.

And the home side almost found themselves level just minutes later when Smith raced onto a long ball over the top from Bodurov. He beat the defender to it and lobbed the keeper, but saw his effort drop agonisingly wide of the far post.

A sublime outside of the boot pass from Guthrie then sent Kačaniklić racing through on goal, but Harlee Dean made a superb recovery to poke away the danger.

Gray then departed the action, with Chris Long replacing him in a like for like switch up top for the Bees.

A big hoof from Button was expertly controlled by Judge on 76 minutes and after advancing on goal his shot needed a Hoogland deflection to turn it behind.

Symons made another change on 79 minutes, with Kavanagh replacing Kačaniklić.

Tunnicliffe had a great chance to equalise two minutes later when he cut inside after being picked out by a fine Guthrie pass, only to slice his left-footed effort into the grateful arms of Button.

The final Brentford change saw Dallas make way for Tommy Smith.

It looked as though Fulham were certain to be awarded a second penalty with five minutes remaining. McCormack played in Smith and he was barged over by James Tarkowski, but to the shock of everyone the referee considered it to be a fair challenge.

Tunnicliffe had the ball in the net a minute later but the whistle had already gone for a foul on Button by Smith, before Bettinelli was forced to beat away a vicious Judge volley.

It was all Fulham but the visitors secured the points in the 90th minute when Judge crashed a sublime free-kick in off the bar following a Bodurov foul.

In the five minutes of time added on, after the visiting fans had launched some kind of pyrotechnic onto the pitch, Husband almost set up Smith but the striker couldn’t quite get on the end of his ball across the face.

Jota then rubbed salt in the wounds by smashing in a close range strike to cap a miserable afternoon for the Whites.
