Two second half goals earned Brighton a 2-0 win at Craven Cottage in Fulham’s final game of the calendar year.

Two second half goals earned Brighton & Hove Albion a 2-0 win at Craven Cottage in Fulham’s final game of the calendar year.

After a tepid opening 45 minutes, it was the visitors who made the breakthrough after the restart when Adrian Colunga converted a penalty after Kostas Stafylidis had fouled Elliott Bennett.

Fulham pushed hard for an equaliser and went close on two occasions, but former Whites goalkeeper David Stockdale pulled off great saves to deny substitute Sean Kavanagh and Hugo Rodallega.

Those stops proved crucial as the Seagulls put the game to bed when Solly March netted late on to move them to within five points of Fulham.

Kit Symons made two changes to the side that lost at Bournemouth three days earlier, with Bryan Ruiz and Lasse Vigen Christensen replaced in midfield by George Williams and Emerson Hyndman.

After Danny Holla volleyed a half chance some way wide in the opening exchanges, Fulham reacted positively and a quick free-kick almost saw Williams set up a scoring chance, before a purposeful Seko Fofana run ended with the youngster poking wide from 20 yards.

But Brighton had a decent chance of their own on eight minutes when Inigo Calderon sent over a deep cross that found its way to Colunga on the far side who sent in a sweet first time strike that required a good save from Marcus Bettinelli.

Ross McCormack was next to try his luck and his effort from outside the box on the quarter hour mark was well worth a go as it whipped off a defender and missed the target by a slim margin. From the resulting corner, Nikolay Bodurov saw his header fly over.

On 29 minutes the visitors could maybe count themselves fortunate to keep 11 men on the pitch. Rodallega intercepted a loose ball and skipped beyond Greg Halford, who caught the Fulham striker hard and high. A booking was the punishment dished out, though.

Three minutes later Elliott Bennett managed to squeeze a shot through a raft of bodies which Bettinelli saw late but still managed to push behind.

Five minutes before half-time the Whites came within a stud’s length of taking the lead. Stafylidis volleyed in a fierce shot towards the far post that had Rodallega stretching, but just unable to reach as it missed the target. Any touch at all would have sent it into the net.

Somehow the Seagulls failed to take the lead nine minutes after the restart. Elliott Bennett found space 10 yards out only to see his effort blocked by Hyndman, before his rebound was brilliantly repelled by Bettinelli. Still the danger wasn’t cleared though, and the home fans were grateful when they saw Colunga’s follow up hit the post and go behind.

That proved to be a warning sign that Fulham failed to head as a rash Stafylidis challenge on Elliott Bennett saw the visitors awarded a penalty just before the hour mark following a quick counter attack. Colunga coolly sent Bettinelli the wrong way to put his side in front.

Symons responded with a double change, as Williams and Hyndman made way for Cauley Woodrow and Kavanagh.

Woodrow’s first sight of goal arrived moments later but his first time strike from Rodallega’s lay-off flew some way over the bar.

Fulham’s other substitute Kavanagh then produced a moment of magic as he cut onto his weaker right foot – not that you would have known it from the shot that followed – and produced a wicked bending effort that was heading for the postage stamp until Stockdale pulled off a fine save at full stretch.

Brighton then made their first alteration of the evening, as striker Craig Mackail-Smith made way for midfielder March.

Joao Teixeira was then allowed to run infield on 75 minutes before letting fly from 20 yards. Thankfully his low effort was too close to Bettinelli who claimed comfortably.

Elliott Bennett was the next man to be replaced, with Chris O’Grady taking his spot on the pitch.

Fulham came agonisingly close to the equaliser on 82 minutes. Scott Parker fed Rodallega in the box and the Colombian kept his cool to beat a man before sending a shot into the far corner, that somehow Stockdale got down to push behind for a corner.

From the subsequent set-piece, Kavanagh volleyed the loose ball a yard wide following something of a melee in the box.

But the decisive second goal went the way of the Seagulls on 87 minutes. Teixeira played a perfect through pass to March who clinically dispatched the ball into the far corner beyond the exposed Bettinelli.

Patrick Roberts then came on for the final moments in place of Stafylidis.

Fulham didn’t lie down and another powerful Fofana run ended with him lashing in a strike that hit a Brighton defender which sent it behind for a corner.

The game’s final substitution was then made, as Teixeira made way for former Fulham favourite Aaron Hughes who came on to a warm reception from the home crowd.

That was about all the Whites fans had to applaud, though, as the curtain came down on 2014 in disappointing fashion.
