Ten-man Fulham suffered a smash-and-grab defeat on Wednesday evening as Leeds United claimed a 3-0 victory.

Ten-man Fulham suffered a smash-and-grab defeat at Craven Cottage on Wednesday evening as Leeds United claimed a 3-0 victory.

The Whites dominated the opening period and could have been several goals to the good by the time Sam Byram headed in the opener, but went into half-time ruing their missed chances.

Sol Bamba then doubled the lead moments after the restart when he nodded in from Alex Mowatt’s corner, and Kostas Stafylidis was then shown two yellow cards in the space of a minute to give the home side an even bigger mountain to climb.

Despite their man disadvantage, Fulham continued to create the better chances, but Leeds were happy to sit back and counter which worked perfectly as they added some gloss to the scoreline late on when substitute Mirco Antenucci saw his mishit shot find the net.

Kit Symons made a solitary change to the side that drew at Sheffield Wednesday four days earlier, with Bryan Ruiz reinstated in attacking midfield having been rested for the Hillsborough trip. Sean Kavanagh dropped to the bench to make room for the Costa Rican. Ross McCormack and Matt Smith started up front against their former employers.

Fulham should have gone in front with six minutes on the clock when Giuseppe Bellusci’s attempted headed clearance fell kindly for McCormack in the box, but the striker’s placed effort was well saved by Marco Silvestri who got down well to deny the Scotland international. He couldn’t hold onto the ball but the danger was cleared before Ryan Tunnicliffe could turn it in.

Two minutes later it was the other former United favourite who threatened the break the deadlock as Smith fired Ruiz’s throughball towards goal, but Bellusci just did enough to put him off.

Fulham were playing with confidence and that was demonstrated in the ninth minute when Ruiz tried his luck from 35 yards and drew an acrobatic stop from Silvestri who tipped it over.

The Leeds goalkeeper was called upon from the subsequent corner to beat away Ruiz’s delivery. The ball dropped for Stafylidis 30 yards from goal and his low strike looked set to find the bottom corner, only for Silvestri to make another excellent save.

Silvestri was by far the busiest man on the pitch and he was called upon again moments later as McCormack’s chipped pass found Smith whose header was pushed behind by the Italian. Ruiz’s corner then did beat him, but unfortunately the ball thumped against the bar direct from the set-piece.

The Whites were playing some excellent stuff and almost made a deserved breakthrough on 18 minutes when McCormack’s inswinging free-kick was met by Smith at the far post, but he couldn’t quite make enough of an angle on his header and he missed the target.

Leeds’ first effort of the game then arrived on 22 minutes when Bellusci hit a speculative dipping volley from 30 yards, but Marcus Bettinelli got his body behind it and saved comfortably.

McCormack did have the ball in the back of the net on the half hour mark, only to be denied by the linesman’s flag, much to the delight of the travelling fans in the Putney End behind the goal. He’d volleyed in from Smith’s flick-on, but had just strayed offside.

Smith then had a go from the edge of the box after Tunnicliffe had sent a ball over the top, but his first-time right footed volley didn’t trouble Silvestri.

Fulham were dominating the shot count without finding the goal their play merited, although it would almost certainly have arrived if Tim Hoogland had been able to get a better connection on Stafylidis’ marvellous cross on 38 minutes.

For all the Whites’ pressure, it was the visitors who took the lead, completely against the run of play. After winning the ball near the left corner flag, Gaetano Berardi whipped a cross in and Byram was able to get a run on the defenders to head beyond the exposed Bettinelli.

Fulham looked for a quick response and Hoogland did well to get on the end of a loose ball in the Leeds area but, under pressure, skewed his shot some way off target.

In the first minute of the second half, Billy Sharp was shown the game’s first yellow card when he prevented Fulham from taking a free-kick.

And moments later they had their second goal. A dangerous corner was whipped in by Mowatt and Bamba had space at the far post to stoop a header towards goal that had too much pace for Bettinelli, who did get a hand to it.

Things went from bad to worse moments later when a mad minute saw Stafylidis sent off. The left-back was initially yellow carded for dissent having disagreed with a throw-in decision, before fouling Byram – something that referee Chris Kavanagh considered worthy of a second yellow.

The home side could have reduced the deficit on 55 minutes when the ball dropped to Tunnicliffe eight yards out with the goal at his mercy, but his half volley was deflected behind via Silvestri.

Symons made his first switch on 63 minutes, replacing Ruiz with Alexander Kačaniklić.

Fulham’s luck in front of goal was then summed up as Shaun Hutchinson leapt highest to connect with McCormack’s free-kick, only to see his header smack against the post before being cleared.

Far from throwing in the towel, the Whites kept plugging away, with Smith next to have a go, but his shot on the swivel went a yard wide of the far post.

Leeds then made their first change as Steve Morison came on in a straight swap up front for Sharp.

McCormack sent over a floated cross on 71 minutes that was inviting for Smith. The imposing striker got above Bamba but nodded his header wide of the near post.

He had a much simpler chance two minutes later following good link-up play between Tunnicliffe and Kačaniklić, but he scuffed his right footed shot and Silvestri easily saved down low.

McCormack then got on the end of a short Kačaniklić cross as Fulham continued to turn the screw, but his glanced header dropped harmlessly wide.

With eight minutes to play, Mowatt made way to be replaced by Antenucci, while Seko Fofana came on for McCormack who had picked up a knock following an earlier foul by Scott Wootton.

Fofana was immediately involved as he embarked on a penetrating run before laying off to Hoodland, who skied his first time strike.

Bamba was then booked for stopping Bettinelli from releasing the ball, before Antenucci wrapped things up with a fortuitous goal. Byram’s cross was beaten away by Bettinelli and the Italian striker miscued his shot, firing into the ground, but the bounce worked in his favour as it looped over the covering defenders and into the net.

Inside four minutes of added time Kačaniklić had one final chance to grab a consolsation but was superbly denied by the excellent Silvestri who tipped his shot onto the post, as the curtain came down on a game that saw Fulham have 19 more efforts on goal than their opponents, but with nothing to show for it.
