McCormack, Hutchinson, Christensen and Woodrow all scored as Fulham beat Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 at the Cottage.

Goals from Ross McCormack, Shaun Hutchinson, Lasse Vigen Christensen and Cauley Woodrow earned Fulham a terrific 4-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon.

The Whites survived a spell of pressure from their guests to take the lead on 34 minutes, with McCormack bending in a brilliant free-kick in front of the Putney End.

Hutchinson then popped up with a headed second on 45 minutes when he connected with Bryan Ruiz’s free-kick to give Wednesday a much bigger mountain to climb after the restart.

And Christensen started and finished a swift counter to all but kill the game in the 67th minute, although there was still time for Woodrow to add a 93rd-minute fourth from the penalty spot. The goal swing also saw the Whites move above their opponents in the Sky Bet Championship table, with both teams on 28 points.

Kit Symons made two changes to the side that defeated Leeds United last time out. Marcus Bettinelli returned in place of Gabor Kiraly having served his one-match ban, while Captain Scott Parker came in for Emerson Hyndman after recovering from the illness that kept him out of the Elland Road win.

Fulham began the game brightly and had the game’s first half-chance on four minutes. McCormack’s cross the far post was met by Hutchinson, but his header was bravely blocked by Tom Lees.

Three minutes later Hutchinson’s central defensive partner Nikolay Bodurov connected with a curling McCormack free-kick, but his header looped over the crossbar.

The clearest opening fell the way of the visitors, though, on 11 minutes. Lees found space at the far post at a corner but couldn’t connect properly with the ball, sending it some way off target from a couple of yards out.

On the quarter hour mark Fulham came close to the opener when McCormack slipped Christensen into the box. The Dane rounded goalkeeper Keiren Westwood but his cutback from a tight angle was cleared behind for a corner.

Bettinelli was then called into action for the first time at the other end, getting down well to repel Chris Maguire’s low drive.

On 22 minutes Rodallega almost put his side in front through sheer determination. Anticipating a weak lobbed backpass, he won possession from Lees, flicked it over his head and sent in a volley that was turned past the post by Westwood.

Wednesday were not without their own threat, though, and Fulham required the services of Kostas Stafylidis on the goal line to deny a combination of Lees and Stevie May from a corner.

And the visiting supporters were celebrating moments when they saw the net ripple at the far Hammersmith End. But, much to the amusement of the home fans, Lewis McGugan’s free-kick had actually hit the side-netting on the wrong side of the post.

Stafylidis was the first man to have his name taken by the referee on 28 minutes when he fouled Maguire near the corner flag. Although, judging by the reaction of the Greece international and the Whites faithful, it may have been a harsh decision.

Owls skipper Glenn Loovens followed him into the book shortly after for unceremoniously halting a Seko Fofana run a good 25 yards from goal. McCormack stepped up and bent a sumptuous effort into the corner of the net. No chance at all for Westwood.

Wednesday responded quickly and May drew a good one-handed save from Bettinelli. The ball spun up and could have gone anywhere but the Fulham stopper got his bearings quickly and clutched the loose ball before someone in a yellow shirt could stick it in.

Jeremy Helan then embarked on a one-man mission to draw his side level, taking on four Fulham defenders before dragging a left-footed strike wide of the far post.

And in the final minute of normal time in the first half, Hutchinson nodded in his first goal for the Club. A wicked inswinging free-kick from Bryan Ruiz was headed back across goal by the centre-back and into the corner of the net.

Needing a big second half performance, Wednesday made a couple of attacking changes at the break; Kieran Lee and Joe Mattock coming off for Atdhe Nuhiu and Royston Drenthe.

Six minutes into the second 45, Fulham were awarded another free-kick in a promising position when McCormack was hacked down from behind by Jose Semedo, who was booked. The Scotsman stepped up once again but this time saw his curling effort narrowly miss the target.

Fofana was then carded for a foul on 55 minutes, before coming off eight minutes later. George Williams was the man who replaced him.

Wednesday were being frustrated by an organised Fulham outfit which meant they had to resort to long shots – the latest of which saw Maguire go close with a daisy-cutter from 25 yards which missed by a yard or so.

They went close from a corner on 67 minutes but, after getting the ball away, Fulham countered to devastating effect with Christensen. It was four on two and the midfielder played it wide to Rodallega, who quickly squared it back to him once he’d found space. Using Williams as a decoy to his right, he worked an angle and crashed in an effort via the post to give his side a three-goal lead.

It should have been four moments later when a dangerous Rodallega cross found Christensen a yard from goal, only for Westwood to make a great recovery to snatch the ball off his toes.

Wednesday then made their final change as Loovens made way for Claude Dielna, before Symons made his second alteration by replacing Rodallega with Woodrow.

With seven minutes left to play, McGugan went close again when he skipped a challenge and sent in a dipping strike that flew wide of the far post.

It looked certain that the Whites were to be awarded a penalty on 87 minutes when Westwood wiped out Woodrow after being rounded by the Fulham striker, but the referee gave a goal kick. There was no booking for Woodrow either, though, which suggests the officials didn’t think he dived.

Patrick Roberts then came on for the last few minutes in place of Ruiz.

The teenager had a real impact, winning a stoppage time penalty when he nicked the ball beyond Dielna who wiped him out. Woodrow stepped up to emphatically plant the ball in the bottom left-hand corner.

It wrapped up a superb win for the Whites and was especially impressive considering the Owls’ excellent defensive record, this being their heaviest loss in the league this season.
