Ross McCormack and Matt Smith scored two fine goals but Fulham were pegged back on each occasion by Wigan.

Ross McCormack and Matt Smith scored two fine goals but Fulham were pegged back on each occasion as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Wigan Athletic at the Cottage on Friday night.

McCormack, sent off against Wigan in the 3-3 draw at the DW Stadium in November, put the Whites in front in the fourth minute with a placed effort from 25 yards.

But defending set-pieces has been Fulham’s Achilles heel at times this season and struggling Wigan, who went into the game in the relegation places and without a win in their last four, drew level when Jermaine Pennant curled home an excellent free-kick with 22 minutes played.

Smith put the Whites back in the lead in the 35th minute with a wonderful shot from all of 30 yards that sailed over Scott Carson’s head.

But another set-play was Fulham’s undoing in the second period as a Pennant corner was flicked into the path of Jason Pearce to nod home from close range.

The Whites pushed for a winner but honours finished even as Fulham remained nine points clear of the drop zone.

Kit Symons made one change from the team that drew 1-1 at Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night as Jack Grimmer came in to replace the injured Danny Guthrie in a move that saw Tim Hoogland pushed into midfield. Former Wigan striker Hugo Rodallega was on the bench for the Whites. The Latics were led for the first time by new manager Gary Caldwell. The former Scotland international was named boss on Tuesday following the departure of Malky Mackay 24 hours earlier. He named former Fulham loanee William Kvist in his starting XI.

The Whites were in front with their first attack. A long ball forward by James Husband was only cleared as far as Sean Kavanagh. He played a pass to McCormack who took aim from just outside the box and curled a sublime effort beyond Scott Carson and into the corner of the net for his 15th goal of the season in all competitions for the Whites.

Wigan responded with a decent spell of pressure but the most they offered during that time was an ambitious long-range effort from near to 40 yards by Harry Maguire which flew high into the Hammersmith End in the 19th minute.

Scott Parker was somewhat lucky to escape a booking for catching James McClean just outside the box 60 seconds later as the winger cut inside and shaped to shoot. And from the resulting free-kick, Pennant curled the set-piece over the wall and past Marcus Bettinelli.

Dan Burn went into the book in the 27th minute for a foul on Kim Bo-Kyung on the halfway line as Wigan looked to break. The visitors were enjoying the majority of possession but Fulham finally began to claw their way back into game and McCormack looked set to make it 2-1 in the 33rd minute when he latched onto Michael Turner’s long ball forward but was denied by a fine block from Emmerson Boyce as the Scot pulled the trigger.

It mattered little. Two minutes later, Smith was found in space 30 yards out by Ryan Tunnicliffe. The big striker took a touch before going for goal, sending his shot over the head of Carson and just under the bar. It was an absolute beauty and a real contender for Fulham’s goal of the season.

Kavanagh was booked for catching Pennant on the stroke of half-time. The referee initially only gave a free-kick but the reaction of Pennant, who writhed around on the floor, then saw the yellow card produced.

There were no changes by either side for the start of the second half but Wigan did make their first substitution in the 57th minute as Martyn Waghorn replaced Marc-Antoine Fortune as the Latics waited to take a corner. From Pennant’s set-piece, McClean headed straight at Bettinelli.

At the other end, McCormack saw a shot charged down with Kavanagh sending the rebound high and wide with an ambitious effort. Fulham’s first change came in the 63rd minute as Smith made way for Cauley Woodrow.

Wigan were level in the 69th minute. Pennant’s corner was met by an unmarked Maguire who flicked the ball into the path of Pearce at the back post and he sent a diving header beyond Bettinelli from just a couple of yards out.

Fulham had a great chance to regain the lead three minutes later as Burn rose to meet McCormack’s free-kick but headed over the bar. Bryan Ruiz, who scored twice at the DW Stadium in the 3-3 draw, replaced Kavanagh immediately afterwards.

Parker forced Carson into a fairly comfortable save with nine minutes to go with a left-footed effort from just outside the area. Woodrow then saw a low angled shot held by the former England international as the clock ticked into the 86th minute. In stoppage-time Woodrow’s shot was blocked by Gaetan Bong.

McCormack went off with a few seconds remaining for Kostas Stafylidis but there was barely time for the game to restart as Fulham ran out of time in their search for a late winner.
