A dominant Fulham went out at the Third Round stage of this year’s FA Cup following a 2-1 defeat by Sheffield Wednesday.

A dominant Fulham went out at the Third Round stage of this year’s FA Cup following a 2-1 defeat by Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Shaun Hutchinson and Jamie O’Hara had already gone close by the time the home side took the lead, and there was a dreadful sense of déjà vu about it as Andrew Lonergan was beaten by a second phenomenal Wednesday strike in eight days as Barry Bannan rifled in a long range volley.

Their lead was short-lived, though, as substitute Moussa Dembélé made no mistake from close range after McCormack’s shot had deflected into his path.

Fulham had glorious chances either side of half-time to take the lead but Owls goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith denied both McCormack and Dembélé, pulling off a world-class save to keep out the latter’s header inside the six yard box.

Kačaniklić then failed to connect properly from Tom Cairney’s ball across the face to give Wednesday a let-off, and they took full advantage when Atdhe Nuhiu hit the winner with what was only their second shot on target all afternoon.

Slaviša Jokanović made five changes to the side that was beaten by the same opponents a week earlier. In came Hutchinson, Luke Garbutt, Cairney, Lasse Vigen Christensen and Cauley Woodrow, with Richard Stearman, Tim Ream, Emerson Hyndman, Sakari Mattila and Dembélé the men making way.

The game was preceded by a minute’s applause in memory of former Owls goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek following his untimely passing at the end of last year.

Following a misplaced Wednesday pass it was Fulham who had the first opening of the game with less than a minute played. O’Hara eventually had a shot from 20 yards out after plenty of passing around the penalty area, but it lacked power and Wildsmith was none too troubled.

Jazz Richards was then shown an early yellow card for tugging back Modou Sougou as the hosts looked to counter having won possession in the middle of the park.

Wednesday then squandered a glorious opportunity to open the scoring after the Whites failed to clear the ball in the aftermath of that free-kick, but thankfully centre-back Glenn Loovens blazed over when the chance dropped to him.

Fulham were given a free-kick of their own in a dangerous position in the 13th minute. It was in a similar position to that from which McCormack netted against Preston North End earlier in the season, but this time O’Hara took it on and saw his powerful curler beaten away by Wildsmith.

Woodrow was then penalised after catching Daniel Pudil in the chest with his arm as he contested a ball. He appeared to get away with a talking to, but referee Gavin Ward eventually decided to write his name next to Richards’ in his notebook.

Hutchinson came close to putting his side in front with 21 minutes played when O’Hara found him unmarked at the back post with his corner delivery, but the defender planted his header just wide.

Woodrow took a knock during that passage of play, and had to be replaced by Dembélé.

Just after the half hour mark Kačaniklić worked space for a low cross in from the right which McCormack let run to Dembélé, who skipped one challenge but then had it taken off his toes before he could get his shot away from 12 yards.

Some lovely forward play almost saw Fulham take the lead in the 39th minute only for McCormack to be flagged offside as he collected O’Hara’s one-two.

For the second game in a row, the Owls took the lead against Fulham with an absolute worldie of a strike. This time Bannan caressed a stunning half volley with the outside of his boot from distance that flew into the postage stamp of the goal, via the crossbar, leaving Lonergan with zero chance.

The advantage lasted a matter of seconds, though. A beautiful slide-rule pass from Cairney sent McCormack in behind, and his low strike across the face was deflected only as far as Dembélé who steadied himself before rifling in from four yards out.

It was no less than the Whites deserved, who – in contrast to last week – had fashioned the far clearer chances in the opening 45.

In fact, it should have been 2-1 to Fulham moments later when a wayward defensive header sent McCormack in on goal. He brought the ball down well but couldn’t get it out from under his feet, meaning his shot was tame and easily stopped by Wildsmith.

Wednesday made one change at the interval, as Alex Lopez was replaced by Jeremy Helan.

How it wasn’t 2-1 to Fulham 90 seconds after the restart, we’ll never know. Richards floated in a sublime left footed cross that was nodded goalwards by Dembélé, only for Wildsmith to pull off an absolutely remarkable point blank save.

Three minutes later Bannan was presented with a half chance on the edge of the box, but the midfielder was losing his balance as he went to strike and his effort whistled a yard over the bar.

Dembélé had another good chance fall his way shortly after when Garbutt’s low delivery caused havoc in the Wednesday box, but his shot was expertly blocked by a brave Pudil lunge.

It was a game that certainly wasn’t short on openings, and Vincent Sasso was next to go close when he headed over from a Ross Wallace corner.

The Whites were then generously awarded a free-kick 25 yards out just right of central after Kačaniklić appeared to have lost his footing. McCormack was back on set-piece duty this time but belted his shot into the wall.

Kačaniklić must have thought he’d put his side in front when Cairney’s ball across the face found him at the far post, but he couldn’t make a decent connection and the home side were able to clear.

Just before the hour mark, Wednesday withdrew Sougou and replaced him with Nuhiu.

Dan Burn, who was having an excellent game defensively, was next to have a go when he managed to connect with O’Hara’s corner, but he could only volley wide.

With 20 minutes remaining Jokanović made a double change. Garbutt, who appeared to take a knock earlier, came off for Ream, and Kačaniklić made way for Mattila.

And moments later the Owls regained their lead. Fulham were unable to get any distance on the ball as they tried to clear, and Nuhiu volleyed into the ground and beyond Lonergan at his far post.

McCormack looked to provide an immediate response when he cranked up that right foot of his from 30 yards, but his well hit shot didn’t dip in time to find its target, although it had the diving Wildsmith worried.

The hosts then made their final switch as Wallace came off for Jose Semedo.

With Fulham going all out for what would be a deserved equaliser, Wednesday were happy to put 11 men behind the ball and try to counter attack. And in that manner they almost got their third in the 84th minute when Lucas Joao tried to place one after it had been cut back to him by Helan, but he sliced wide of the near post.

With two minutes left the ball broke to Mattila some distance from goal. The Finland international went for the first time shot and got his head over the ball well to control it, yet it still flew a couple of yards over the crossbar.

That proved to be the final chance for the Whites as they slipped to a very harsh FA Cup exit.
