A brilliant second half display saw Fulham defeat Sheffield United 3-0 in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday evening.

A brilliant second half display saw Fulham defeat Sheffield United 3-0 in the Second Round of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday evening.

The Whites went closest in the first half when the impressive Ryan Tunnicliffe rifled a shot against the crossbar from distance, but the lead did come 17 minutes after the restart when Ross McCormack netted a penalty after being fouled in the box.

It was his first goal of the campaign and he doubled his tally not long after with a peach of a strike which nestled in the far corner, to all but kill the contest.

Blades substitute Jose Baxter was shown a straight red card in the dying stages for a criminal challenge on Tom Cairney, and his teammate Kieran Wallace followed him down the tunnel soon after for fouling Moussa Dembélé when he was through on goal.

Dembélé was a constant thorn in the visitors’ side and he got the goal his all-round play deserved in the fourth minute of stoppage time to cap an excellent night’s work at Craven Cottage.

Kit Symons made three changes to the side that drew with Huddersfield Town last time out, as Shaun Hutchinson and Jamie O’Hara missed out, while Cairney dropped to the bench. Tim Ream was handed a debut at centre-back, whilst Tunnicliffe and Ben Pringle also came in.

Martyn Woolford had the first decent chance of the game on five minutes when the ball got away from Lasse Vigen Christensen. Woolford cut in and fired goalwards, but Andrew Lonergan got fingertips to the ball to push it behind at the expense of a corner, which was nodded over by Harrison McGahey.

Alexander Kačaniklić had Fulham’s opening effort moments later after jinking between three green shirts, but dragged his low strike wide of the near post.

Fulham went within an inch of taking the lead on 12 minutes. Christensen showed great skill to weave his way into the box before cutting back to McCormack. His shot was blocked and the rebound dropped to Tunnicliffe 20 yards out, but his sumptuous piledriver smashed against the bar and away.

A misplaced Ream pass then presented Marc McNulty with a half chance, but Lonergan was equal to his effort. And the same was true at the other end a minute later when George Long got down to smother Christensen’s daisy-cutter.

The Whites had a great chance to break the deadlock on 25 minutes when good pressing from Kay Voser and Tunnicliffe resulted in the former playing Dembélé in with a reverse pass, but the Frenchman’s strike across the face missed the target by a yard or so.

After a lull in the tempo of the game, the hosts went close again on 39 minutes when a beautiful Pringle cross from the left was glanced wide by Dembélé, before a Woolford strike deflected marginally off target at the other end.

Just over a minute after the restart United were shown the game’s first yellow card when James Wallace clipped Tunnicliffe who had embarked on a barnstorming run down the centre of the pitch.

Some patient build-up play on the edge of the United box on 54 minutes eventually saw the ball worked to McCormack. He hit a powerful left-footed effort on target on the spin, but it was straight down the throat of Long who claimed comfortably.

Just after the hour mark, Fulham were awarded a penalty when Tunnicliffe headed into the danger area following a corner, and McCormack was held back by Kieran Wallace as he went for the overhead kick. The Whites Captain took the spot-kick himself and coolly planted it into the bottom left-hand corner to get off the mark for the season.

Symons then immediately made his first change, replacing Kačaniklić with Cairney, while the Blades brought Baxter and Connor Dimaio on for Diego De Girolamo and James Wallace soon after.

On 70 minutes a perfectly weighted through ball from Cairney released Dembélé, but the covering defender did well to block his shot. Tunnicliffe then won possession 40 yards from goal and fed the Frenchman again, but this time he blasted high and wide on his left foot.

Dimaio then blazed comfortably over the bar in front of the visiting fans as United launched a rare attack towards the Putney End.

Our number 44 then killed the tie with quarter of an hour remaining with a classic McCormack finish. After Pringle cut the ball back to him, the forward steadied himself before placing an accurate shot inside the far corner.

Dembélé had done everything but score and he went as close as he had all game two minutes later when his firm header from Pringle’s cross was superbly palmed over by Long.

Ream was then withdrawn – to a standing ovation from the home supporters – to be replaced by Nikolay Bodurov.

United threatened briefly again with seven minutes remaining, but McNulty’s header was never troubling Lonergan. Nigel Adkins then made his final change as Che Adams came on for Craig Alcock.

Baxter was then given his marching orders for a despicable challenge on Cairney. The Fulham substitute had made a fool of the Blades man with a neat bit of skill and Baxter responded with a terrible late challenge that thankfully didn’t do any lasting damage.

From the subsequent free-kick Bodurov connected with McCormack’s delivery but his downwards header lacked the pace to trouble Long.

McCormack tried for his hat-trick in stoppage time with a drilled strike from 35 yards, but it fell a yard wide of the post.

United then saw their second player shown a straight red card when Kieran Wallace was dismissed for hauling Dembélé down when he was through on goal. McCormack blasted the free-kick towards goal and drew an excellent sprawling save from Long.

The United goalkeeper was beaten again, though, as Dembélé diverted the ball beyond him in the last minute of time added on to wrap up a comfortable win for Fulham.
