Fulham’s Capital One Cup run was brought to an end as Stoke City survived a late Whites rally to progress into Round 4.

Fulham’s Capital One Cup run was brought to an end as Stoke City survived a late Whites rally to progress into Round 4.

Towering striker Peter Crouch pounced in the 33rd minute to give the visitors a tight half-time lead in a closely-contested opening 45 minutes.

The Whites managed to convert their superior possession into chances as the second-half drew towards a close, with Ross McCormack, substitute Moussa Dembélé, Lasse Vigen Christensen and Dan Burn all coming agonisingly close to a equaliser.

It was an impressive rally but not enough to breach a well-organised Potters defence as the Premier League outfit held out under pressure to secure their place among the last 16 teams in the competition.

Manager Kit Symons fielded a strong starting line-up, making six changes from the weekend defeat at Sheffield Wednesday. Cardiff loanee Joe Lewis stepped in to make his Whites debut in goal behind a back four of Jazz Richards, Richard Stearman, Burn and Tim Ream, who shifted to left-back to replace the cup-tied James Husband.

Sakari Mattila made his first Fulham start alongside Christensen in midfield, with Ben Pringle and Alexander Kačaniklić wide of Cauley Woodrow and Captain McCormack up front.

Former Whites Manager Mark Hughes rung the changes in his eleven, with defenders Marc Wilson, Eric Pieters and Geoff Cameron the only survivors from Stoke’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City. A familiar face skippered the Potters, Steve Sidwell, who parted company with Fulham in the summer of 2014 after three seasons in SW6.

The Whites made a bright start on a chilly September night, as Woodrow skipped past Wilson to win a free-kick after 13 seconds. The visitors dealt with Pringle’s delivery, as they did when Richards made progress to the by-line and crossed after six minutes.

Pringle’s ninth minute corner proved to be more testing, forcing Phil Bardsley to stretch to clear his lines, and the visitors were scrambling back again on 14 minutes. Kačaniklić nutmegged Pieters and drilled a low ball across goal, which was fortuitously diverted to safety off the legs of goalkeeper Shay Given.

It took until the 19th minute for Stoke to register their first attempt, when Peter Odemwingie seized on a loose ball but dragged his 20-yard strike wide of Lewis’ goal. The Whites turned the tables back on the Potters after 22 minutes. McCormack broke away on the left and his vicious cross was nicked away from the head of the onrushing Woodrow by centre-back Wilson.

Despite enjoying plenty of possession over the next 10-minute period, Mattila’s wayward shot was all the Whites could muster against Stoke’s compact back-line. Then Fulham were punished on 33 minutes when Cameron slipped Crouch through on goal and he finished calmly from 18 yards.

There were signs of Fulham providing an immediate response as Woodrow drew a foul from Pieters and McCormack’s 25-yard free-kick found the base of the Potters’ defensive wall. Kačaniklić and Pringle switched sides and the former delivered a precise square ball for the latter, who scuffed his effort as he bore down on goal in the 41th minute.

Gasps echoed around Craven Cottage as the clock ticked closer to half-time when Mattila’s excellent delivery was headed against the post by Burn, who was flagged offside moments later, and Stoke held out until the interval after Kačaniklić’s cross flashed across goal.

The Whites continued to threaten in wide areas after the interval, Richards and Kačaniklić both found space to cross, but Stoke’s rear-guard again stood firm. Pringle weaved his way through the centre and unleashed a 20-yard strike which whistled over the crossbar. Fulham continued to apply pressure on 54 minutes, Kačaniklić powered forward and was sent tumbling on the edge of the area, McCormack’s free-kick cannoned off the wall and Stoke repelled a pair of Pringle corners.

Odemwingie’s cross almost found Crouch in a rare second-half Stoke attack before the Whites regained the ascendancy. Woodrow was tripped on the edge of the area on 62 minutes and McCormack came slightly closer with this free-kick, it just skimming Given’s crossbar on the way over.

Symons made a double substitution in the 65th minute, moving Christensen to the right and introducing Ryan Tunnicliffe in the centre, with Moussa Dembélé replacing Woodrow up front. McCormack joined Dembélé in a more advanced role and the move almost paid off immediately when Pringle’s left-wing cross found McCormack at the far post with the goal gaping, but his sliding effort fell straight into the arms of Given.

Another golden chance fell Fulham’s way on 70 minutes, as Christensen’s smart footwork and deep cross allowed Tunnicliffe to head back across goal and Dembélé fired over with a difficult, spinning volley. With the Whites asking all of the questions, Richards was syched down by Crouch, who received a booking, and the free-kick resulted in a scramble which was cleared by some desperation Stoke defending, despite the efforts of Tunnicliffe and McCormack.

As the Whites pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Ibrahim Affelay played Odemwingie clean through on goal but the Nigerian striker lifted his clear-cut chance over the crossbar. Emerson Hyndman then replaced Mattila after 82 minutes in Fulham's final substitution, before the whole stadium watched as Christensen 40-yard lob over a stranded Given drifted agonisingly wide of goal.

Stoke substitute Mirko Arnautovic should have sealed the result from the edge of the area in the 89th minute but slammed his shot wide of Lewis' goal. With three minutes of stoppage time added, Fulham piled on the pressure. Pringle's deep cross found Christensen arriving at the back post with a volley. The strike was goal-bound but Given made a superb one-handed reaction save, before Burn crashed an effort back off the crossbar as time ran out and the Whites exited the Capital One Cup.
