Fulham picked up a point in their battle for survival at promotion-chasing Birmingham City.

Fulham picked up a point in their battle for survival at promotion-chasing Birmingham City.

Rohan Ince put the Whites in front at St Andrew’s when his drive squirmed through the hands of Tomasz Kuszczak in the 38th minute.

But Michael Morrison levelled matters early in the second half, heading David Cotterill’s cross into the ground and over the returning Marcus Bettinelli.

Clayton Donaldson missed a golden chance late on to win it for Blues, firing over the bar after a David Davis shot had hit the post and looped off Bettinelli as the spoils were shared.

Slaviša Jokanović made five changes to the side that lost 2-1 at home to Bristol City last weekend and also opted for a 4-4-2 formation. Bettinelli returned to the starting XI for the first time since suffering a bad knee injury at Hull City in August, replacing Andrew Lonergan in goal.

In defence, Richard Stearman started at right-back with Tim Ream on the left, while Ince came into midfield and Emerson Hyndman was named on the left flank. Dan Burn was a late replacement for Fernando Amorebieta, with the Venezuelan presumably injured in the warm-up. Shaun Hutchinson, therefore, earned a place on the bench.

In a muted atmosphere, the game began at a slow pace as both sides sized each other up. The first real action of note came in the 11th minute when Stearman made a block tackle on Donaldson as he attempted to wriggle into space in the box.

Fulham’s first foray into the Birmingham half came in the 18th minute as Moussa Dembélé outmuscled a dawdling Jonathan Spector off the ball by the byline. The Frenchman pulled the ball back for Hyndman but his shot was charged down by Morrison from 12 yards.

Cotterill then skinned Hyndman and Ream to advance into space down the right but his pull-back was bundled wide.

Scott Parker should have put the Whites in front in the 23rd minute. Receiving the ball from Dembélé, he exchanged passes with Hyndman on the edge of the box and was suddenly in on goal. With just Kuszczak to beat, he hesitated, eventually opting for a chip over the keeper which was headed off the line by Jonathan Grounds.

A clever free-kick from Blues in the 29th minute saw Cotterill pull the ball back to Stephen Gleeson as everyone awaited a cross. Gleeson went for the curler but was five yards off target from the edge of the area.

Dembélé forced Kuszczak into a low save at his near post five minutes later after being played down the left by Ross McCormack as Fulham broke quickly from the back.

Fulham went in front in the 38th minute. McCormack received the ball on the left and sprayed it out to the opposite flank where Cairney was racing into space. It looked like the move had broken down but he fed the overlapping Ince whose fierce shot squirmed under Kuszczak and slowly over the line. It wasn’t pretty, but quite frankly who cares.

Bettinelli kept Fulham in front with a brilliant save in stoppage time at the end of the first half. Cotterill whipped in a free-kick which was met by an unmarked Spector at the back stick. From just a couple of yards out his header was brilliantly turned over the bar by Bettinelli.

There were no changes by either team for the start of the second half but Dembélé was shown an early yellow card for kicking the ball away after the hosts had won a free-kick.

The first substitution of the day was made by Blues and saw Maikel Kieftenbeld replaced by Jacques Maghoma in the 53rd minute.

City were turning up the tempo by this point and they drew level when a Cotterill corner was only cleared back as far as the winger. He crossed again and centre-back Morrison rose to send a downward header past Bettinelli

Kuszczak then saved bravely at the feet of Michael Madl and, as City quickly broke, Parker was shown a first yellow card of the season for catching Jon Toral. A few squirmishes broke out as tempers flared. Madl followed him into the book a minute later for a poor tackle on Toral 20 yards from goal.

Cairney tried one from distance in the 68th minute but was well off target, before McCormack saw a shot blocked after Madl’s free-kick had found Cairney free down the right.

Caddis forced Bettinelli into a good stop in the 74th minute with a curling left-footed effort from the edge of the box. The keeper didn’t see the shot until late as it came through a crowd of bodies.

Both teams then made changes, James Vaughan coming in for Toral and Ryan Fredericks replacing Hyndman as Cairney moved to the left.

Caddis flashed a shot across goal in the 78th minute, prior to City making their final change as Will Buckley came on for Cotterill.

It should have been 2-1 to the hosts in the 83rd minute. A shot from Davis from outside the box hit the post and came back off Bettinelli. It looped in the air with Donaldson arriving to apply the finish – only to send it over the bar.

Matt Smith entered the fray for Dembélé with three minutes left and Fredericks was booked soon after for foul on Buckley on the halfway line.

Bettinelli was shown a yellow card in stoppage time for time wasting and Birmingham hurled the ball into the box on numerous occasions but the Fulham defence, with Stearman superb, held firm.

With Rotherham United winning at Ipswich Town, though, the Whites remain just a point above the drop zone as Milton Keynes Dons dropped into the bottom three. Fulham meet MK Dons at the Cottage in their next game.
