Fulham’s mini-revival came to an abrupt end with a heavy defeat at promotion-chasing Brighton on Friday night.

Fulham’s mini-revival came to an abrupt end with a heavy defeat at promotion-chasing Brighton on Friday night.

The final scoreline certainly didn’t look like materialising after an opening 25 minutes in which Fulham dominated possession without really troubling David Stockdale.

But a soft and controversial penalty – awarded for a Richard Stearman challenge on James Wilson and converted by Tomer Hemed – knocked the stuffing out of Fulham and they never recovered.

Hemed made it 2-0 soon after with a free header and it was game over when Bruno Saltor crashed home the third early in the second half.

Stockdale made fine saves from Lasse Vigen Christensen and Emerson Hyndman but Hemed grabbed his hat-trick in fortuitous fashion when a Dale Stephens shot bounced off Cauley Woodrow and in off the striker, before the impressive Anthony Knockaert completed the rout with a late fifth. The win sent the Seagulls into the top two.

Slaviša Jokanović made three changes to the side that beat Cardiff City 2-1 last time out. Ryan Fredericks started at right-back, with Stearman moving into the middle of defence as Michael Madl missed out with injury. Ream came in at left-back for Luke Garbutt, while Jamie O’Hara replaced loan man Rohan Ince, who couldn’t play against his parent club.

Brighton’s starting XI included former Fulham players Stockdale and Liam Rosenior, with Steve Sidwell amongst the substitutes.

The first noteworthy action came in the fourth minute when a left-footed corner from Knockaert drifted just wide of Marcus Bettinelli’s far post, although the keeper appeared to have it covered.

Fulham, looking for a fourth successive league win for the first time since the 2000/01 season, responded with their first attack in the ninth minute. Some neat build-up play ended with a long-range effort from Ross McCormack, which was comfortably held by Stockdale.

Backed by more than 2,200 away fans, the Whites were enjoying long spells of possession, but Scott Parker fired well wide with an ambitious effort from distance in the 12th minute, before Ryan Tunnicliffe escaped with a stern warning from referee Andy Woolmer for a late tackle on Jiri Skalak.

Beram Kayal forced Bettinelli to tip his speculative curling shot from fully 30 yards over the bar in the 17th minute. The game then entered something of a lull before bursting into life in the 29th minute. Wilson tried to skip past Stearman down near the left-hand byline and fell theatrically to the floor as he moved into the box when the Whites man put his hands on him. After a moment of hesitation, Woolmer pointed to the spot, much to the Fulham players’ anger. From the spot, Hemed sent Bettinelli the wrong way to put Brighton in front. It was the 11th penalty the Whites have conceded this term.

It was 2-0 five minutes later. After Fernando Amorebieta gave away a free-kick 40 yards from goal, Knockaert delivered the set-play and Hemed lost his marker to rise highest and head beyond Bettinelli and into the far corner.

Hemed was shown a yellow card for hauling back Parker in the 36th minute. O’Hara followed him into the book seconds later for catching Knockaert with a sliding tackle.

The Whites were on their heels and it was almost 3-0 in the 41st minute, Kayal sliding a pass through the Fulham defence for Wilson, whose clip was brilliantly pushed behind by the outrushing Bettinelli. From the subsequent corner, Skalak’s shot hit the heel of Wilson and went behind.

There were no changes by either side for the start of the second half, but Fredericks went into the book 90 seconds after the restart for blocking the run of Kayal.

Albion had their third in the 54th minute. A corner from Skalak was sent to the far stick where O’Hara missed his header and Bruno took a touch before firing home for his first goal of the season.

Fulham made their first change soon after as Parker went off for Christensen, scorer of the winning goal on this ground last season. McCormack took the captain’s armband.

McCormack was immediately presented with a good chance, meeting Moussa Dembélé’s pull-back but firing his first-time shot from 15 yards into the away end.

Knockaert took aim from distance just after the hour mark but Bettinelli got down well to smother his low effort, before Fredericks screwed a shot well wide at the other end after moving into space.

Fulham made a second change in the 63rd minute as O’Hara was replaced by Chris Baird, and Stockdale maintained his clean sheet with a superb one-handed stop to deny Christensen after the Dane had connected with Tunnicliffe’s cross and sent a shot looping towards goal.

Hemed almost completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute as Wilson’s clever pass put him in but Bettinelli saved with his legs.

Fulham continued to try and get back in the game and almost did on 72 as Hyndman burst past a couple of Brighton men but saw his rising drive from just outside the area tipped over the bar by Stockdale.

Christensen picked up a yellow card in the 73rd minute for tugging back Kayal, before Fulham made their final substitution, Woodrow coming on for Amorebieta who appeared to have picked up a knock. Baird slotted into the back four, with Woodrow on the right of midfield.

Stearman made a good block on Hemed in the 79th minute. But the ball found its way out to Stephens whose shot hit Woodrow and bounced in off Hemed, who knew little about it. Furious Fulham appeals for offside were waved away.

Bettinelli palmed away Knockaert’s left-footed scorcher soon after and substitute Sidwell’s drive was cleared off the line by Fredericks as Brighton looked for a fifth. That duly arrived when Knockaert found space down the right, cut inside and hit a curling effort beyond Bettinelli.

Substitute Kazenga LuaLua hit an effort into the side-netting in stoppage time as Fulham fell to a comprehensive first loss in five games.
