A phenomenal first half display from Fulham scared the living daylights out of Bristol City on Halloween, as we claimed a 4-1 win at Ashton Gate.

A phenomenal first half display from Fulham scared the living daylights out of Bristol City on Halloween, with Kit Symons’ men claiming a 4-1 win at Ashton Gate.

Moussa Dembélé turned in James Husband’s cross with less than two minutes played to give the Whites the lead, and he doubled the advantage not long after following good play from Ryan Tunnicliffe and Tom Cairney.

Ross McCormack got in on the act just after the half hour mark with a quality free-kick from a good 30 yards out, and Tunnicliffe put the game out of City’s reach minutes later with an exquisite lob after being sent through.

Ryan Fredericks then hit the crossbar as Fulham threatened to run riot towards the end of the first half. The second period lacked the goalmouth action that had thrilled the away fans in the opening 45 minutes, although City’s Jonathan Kodjia grabbed a consolation for his side in stoppage time.

Symons made three changes to the side that came from behind to defeat Reading last time out. Andrew Lonergan’s return to full fitness saw him replace Joe Lewis in goal, Dan Burn came in for the injured Jazz Richards, and Jamie O’Hara was back in place of Lasse Vigen Christensen after serving a one-match ban. In a tactical switch-up, Burn joined Richard Stearman and Tim Ream at the back, with Fredericks and Husband acting as full backs in a 5-3-2/3-5-2 formation.

Within a minute Fulham found themselves with a shooting chance after Fredericks’ cross made its way to Tunnicliffe on the edge of the box. He was closed down promptly, though, and skewed his shot wide.

But a matter of seconds later the visitors did go in front. Husband marauded forwards and played an inviting square cross into the middle to the in-form Dembélé, who opened up his body and side-footed beyond Frank Fielding.

Bristol City first threatened on the nine minute mark when some clever footwork from Kodjia saw him nutmeg Burn. Elliott Bennett took over the loose ball but his cross was smothered by Lonergan.

Marlon Pack then tried his luck from 25 yards but dragged his shot and it dribbled several yards wide of the far post.

Their best chance arrived after quarter of an hour when Derrick Williams advanced from the back and went to shoot from 20 yards out. Stearman got in the way to prevent that finding its way through but the ball dropped kindly for Kodjia whose strike was true but always rising.

The home side were buoyed by their spell of dominance and should have equalised a minute later when a free-kick over the top found Aden Flint in space, but his volley from six yards was well off target.

Fulham were under the cosh but doubled the lead against the run of play on 18 minutes. A terrible pass out from the back by Flint was intercepted by Tunnicliffe 30 yards from goal and he fed Cairney to his right. He shaped to shoot but instead played in the unmarked Dembélé who coolly slipped a first time shot under Fielding.

Kodjia was proving a handful for the Whites defence and he embarked on another determined run on 28 minutes, eventually seeing his shot deflect off Ream for a corner. That set-piece was swung in dangerously but nobody in red was able to turn it in.

The hosts were given the game’s first booking shortly after the half hour mark when Luke Freeman hacked down Husband 30 yards out after the left wing-back had skipped beyond a handful of the City man’s teammates.

And how Fulham made the Robins pay from the resulting free-kick. The angle and distance seemed to be against McCormack but that didn’t deter our skipper from having a go and his sumptuous strike sailed in at the near post for 3-0.

And it got even better on 36 minutes. Husband – who was having an excellent game – sent Tunicliffe through with a lofted ball over the top and the midfielder showed incredible composure to dink a beautiful lob over Fielding to send the away fans behind the goal into ecstasy.

Former City man Fredericks almost got in on the act three minutes later after being slipped in by Cairney, but his cross-cum-shot grazed the crossbar.

The Robins threatened following a corner shortly after and eventually got a shot in courtesy of Freeman, but Lonergan got down well to smother.

It was almost 5-0 on 42 minutes when a clever corner routine saw O’Hara pick out Cairney whose strike was heading towards the postage stamp of the goal before Fielding managed to claw it away.

It was understandably a frustrating half for the home side and their fans and that was demonstrated by a nasty late challenge by Kodjia in stoppage time, as the striker earned a yellow card for catching Stearman.

The Fulham man joined him in the book a minute later, though, as his trailing leg caught Kodjia as he looked to break. That free-kick came to nothing as the curtain came down on a marvellous opening 45 for Fulham.

Freeman almost worked a shooting chance on the edge of the Fulham box two minutes into the second half, but a stunning sliding tackle from Burn won possession.

The Whites went straight up the other end and should have made it five. Dembélé worked the ball to McCormack who cut inside and beat two defenders, only to rifle his shot into the back of a third.

Kodjia squandered a golden opportunity to pull a goal back for his side on 57 minutes when he intercepted Husband’s backwards header, but Lonergan made himself big and the striker could only find the side-netting.

More excellent skill from Kodjia on the hour mark almost set up a chance for the hosts, who had refused to throw in the towel, but after beating his man his cutback was cleared.

Cairney then had a go at the other end from distance and almost caught Fielding out at his near post, but the goalkeeper was able to push it away and collect at the second attempt.

Despite the scoreline, Kodjia has been a constant threat for the hosts and he burst through on 67 minutes, seemingly one-on-one, only for Burn to make a superb recovery to take it off his toes.

Five minutes later Fulham made their first switch as Fredericks made was for Christensen. Earlier, the Robins had brought on Mark Little and Simon Cox for Joe Bryan and Freeman.

With 10 minutes to go Dembélé departed the action, to applause from the home fans as well as those travelling. Former Ashton Gate loanee Matt Smith came on in his place to a rousing reception having scored 13 goals for the Robins last season.

City then made their final change as Bobby Reid came on for Aaron Wilbraham.

Williams almost notched a consolation for his side in sensation style with five minutes remaining, but his wicked long ranger was superbly tipped over by Lonergan.

Husband limped off moments later after taking a whack on the leg, and he was replaced by Luke Garbutt.

In the third of four minutes added on Kodjia got the goal that his overall play had merited when he ghosted in at the far post, but the afternoon belonged to Fulham who moved up to 10th in the standings.
